Isaac Lohman is a St. Louis Cardinals fan and he has a dream job . . . he’s a batboy for the Cardinals this summer.<\/p>\n

“I’ve always been a big baseball fan,” said the 19-year-old Lohman, who is the son of Bob and Cyra Lohman of Waterloo. He is also the grandson of Norbert and Bernice Lohman, who live in Teutopolis.<\/p>\n

“I’ve wanted to be an event attendant,” said Lohman. “I saw online this position had opened up and I got an interview. I thought it didn’t go well, but apparently it did.”<\/p>\n

There are three bat boys for the home team and Loman is one of those.<\/p>\n

“Two of us work each game,” said Lohman. “It’s usually one out of three games I don’t have to work. We usually know our schedule a couple of weeks in advance.”<\/p>\n

This is the first year he’s been a bat boy and will probably work 50 to 55 games and he does get paid to work.<\/p>\n

“We get there early before the game for batting practice, in case they need water. Then during the game, we pick up bats and balls and bring balls to the umpires.<\/p>\n

“After the game we do laundry and hang the uniforms back up in their locker. We also clean their cleats.”<\/p>\n

Lohman usually works around eight or nine hours a day.<\/p>\n

“We get there a few hours before the game and stay a few hours afterwards.”<\/p>\n

Lohman talked about being around the players.<\/p>\n

“They’re all pretty nice guys. There are no problems.<\/p>\n

“On the knob of their bat it has their number. They’ll bring one bat to the plate. I’ll grab one from the dugout in case that one breaks. But nothing weird has happened yet.<\/p>\n

“If two of us work, one person does bats and the other one does baseballs. The one on baseballs has a bucket of balls by us. The umpire will hold up a hand how many he needs and basically you run out the baseballs to him.<\/p>\n

“If a player bats, you wait for the him to get on or get out because then you pick up the elbow guards or shin guards they’ve taken off.”<\/p>\n

Lohman talked about what his favorite part of the job has been.<\/p>\n

“I think my favorite thing is seeing that all the players are just normal guys,” said Lohman. “At the end of the day, they all enjoy being around each other and it’s just fun being there.”<\/p>\n

Do the bat boys still work when the Cardinals are on the road?<\/p>\n

“When they’re out of town we don’t do much. One thing we do when they are out of town is when they are coming back from the last away game, we have to get their equipment. They’re equipment will come back on a plane. We then unload it off the trucks, their bats, their gloves, etc.. We unload it all and get it ready for the next day.”<\/p>\n

Lohman has a brother Noah who is a senior in high school.<\/p>\n

“He’s not a big sports fan so he wouldn’t be interested in working the games. He’s going to Murray State for music.”<\/p>\n

Currently Lohman is attending SIU-E majoring in data analytics and a minor in Spanish.<\/p>\n

“Hopefully down the road I can work for a baseball organization in their analytics department.”<\/p>\n

Lohman was an event attendant for the Cardinals in previous years working upstairs keeping the stadium clean for the fans.<\/p>\n

“This is an advancement,” said Lohman. “I’m just starting to get to know all the players. Hopefully, I don’t fall down because I’m sure the players would make fun of me.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
