MOWEAQUA — Effingham St. Anthony established its game early with an 18-7 run on Nokomis at the Class 1A Moweaqua Central A&M Boys Basketball Regional Wednesday evening and went on for a 45-23 victory.<\/p>\n

The Bulldogs’ Ryan Schmidt hit a basket, then put in two free throws and finished with two three-pointers for 10 of the team’s 18 opening quarter points. Brock Fearday found range from the three-point line and also hit a two-pointer for five and Keenan Griffith knocked down one from beyond the arc.<\/p>\n

The two teams went through a slow-scoring second period as St. Anthony had a slight 5-4 edge to lead 23-11 at halftime.<\/p>\n

Nokomis came back with a 10-9 third quarter. All of the Bulldogs points were three-pointers from Grififth, Will Fearday and B. Fearday.<\/p>\n

St. Anthony ended with a 13-2 final quarter run as Jonny Gannaway was spotlighted with three baskets and a free throw for seven points.<\/p>\n

Only two players finished in double figures in the low-scoring affair. B. Fearday hit five field goals for 12 points while Schmidt added 10. Griffith ended with eight and Gannaway seven.<\/p>\n

The Bulldogs had seven three-pointers.Griffith, Schmidt and B. Fearday had two each.<\/p>\n

Nokomis’ leading scorer was Keller who finished with seven.<\/p>\n

The second game of the evening went to Arcola over Bethany Okaw Valley, 49-34.<\/p>\n

The Bulldogs advance to the championship game Friday and will face Arcola at 7 p.m. If the Bulldogs win, they will face the winner of the Webber Township (Bluford) Regional at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 5 at the Red Hill (Bridgeport) Sectional. Webber Township (Bluford) and Centralia Christ Our Rock Lutheran meet at 7 p.m. for the regional championship Friday.<\/p>\n
