STRASBURG — Kendra Hayes has now joined an Elite Club.<\/p>\n

Hayes knocked in 14 points and has now become a member of the 1,000 point club for her high school basketball career.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately for the Hatchets, they fell to State-ranked Brownstown\/St. Elmo by a 59-30 tally Wednesday evening.<\/p>\n

The Hatchets moved into a 14-10 opening quarter lead as Hayes put in two three-pointers.<\/p>\n

But that lead was short-lived as the Bombers came roaring back with a 22-5 second quarter. Dayana Haslett cut loose with a three-pointer and five regular baskets for 13 points.<\/p>\n

Haslett continued on with three more baskets and was two of two at the line for eight in the third quarter 12-3 run as BSE led 45-22 going into the final period. Madi Miller chipped in with six points.<\/p>\n

BSE then finished out with a 14-8 final period. Haslett connected on two three-pointers and a free throw for seven and finished the contest with 26 points. She hit 10 field goals, three from beyond the arc, and was three of five at the line.<\/p>\n

Also in double figures for the winners was Miller with eight field goals for 16 points.<\/p>\n

Hayes led her team with 14 points on five field goals, four of those three-pointers and has now joined the 1,000 point club.<\/p>\n

Brownstown\/St. Elmo won a two quarter junior varsity contest, 13-11. Audria Logue and Macy Claycomb scored five each.<\/p>\n

WSS was led by K. Dunaway, A. Rincker and S. Greuel with three each.<\/p>\n

At Marshall<\/strong><\/p>\n

Newton players decided this game early as the Eagles ran out to a 24-8 opening quarter lead on Marshall and went on for a 73-65 win Wednesday.<\/p>\n

The Eagles led 39-23 at halftime.<\/p>\n

Alani Bergbower connected on nine field goals, four from three-point range, and one of one at the line for 23 points. Claire Probst put in five baskets and three free throws for 13 while Grace Schumacher added 10.<\/p>\n

Probst led the Eagles in rebounds with 10 and steals with six. Bergbower led in assists with six.<\/p>\n

Newton improved to 19-10 on the season and 4-3 in the Little Illini Conference. The Eagles are back in action today hosting Effingham St. Anthony then open up regional play Saturday hosting Flora.<\/p>\n

Newton edged Marshall 38-32 in the junior varsity contest. Brooke Gentry led with 12 points. The Eagles improved to 9-8 overall.<\/p>\n
