This is critical funding that will help\u00a0eliminate\u00a0dangerous mine hazards, restore damaged lands, and strengthen coal communities across the nation.<\/p>\n<p>These grants, authorized under the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977, protect public safety, support local economies, and help communities repurpose former mine lands for new and productive uses. Projects funded through the program address hazards such as open mine shafts, unstable highwalls, subsidence, and polluted water that can threaten homes, roads, and public infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>Funding for the grants is generated from fees collected on coal production and is\u00a0distributed through\u00a0a congressionally mandated formula tied to each state\u2019s share of past and current coal production. Since 1977, OSMRE has distributed more than\u00a0$6.5\u00a0billion\u00a0in abandoned\u00a0mine land\u00a0fees\u00a0collected\u00a0to\u00a0states\u00a0<wbr \/>and tribes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe\u00a0Abandoned\u00a0Mine\u00a0Lands\u00a0Fee\u2011<wbr \/>based grants remain one of our most effective tools for restoring communities impacted by legacy mining,\u201d said Lanny E. Erdos,\u00a0OSM\u00a0Director. \u201cThese funds\u00a0give the\u00a0states and\u00a0tribes\u00a0the funding\u00a0needed\u00a0to\u00a0address\u00a0<wbr \/>safety\u00a0hazards, protect public health, and return damaged lands to productive use.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For fiscal year 2026,\u00a0twenty-four\u00a0coal-<wbr \/>producing states and two tribal programs are eligible for grants. A mandatory\u00a05.7%\u00a0sequestration applies to the total, resulting in a final amount of\u00a0more than\u00a0$113\u00a0million.<\/p>\n<p>By directly funding state and tribal reclamation programs, the abandoned mine land grants reflect the federal government\u2019s continued commitment to regions that fueled America\u2019s industrial growth.
