Brad Halbrook termed the governor&#8217;s decision to sign Senate Bill 1950 into law, making physician-assisted suicide legal in Illinois, a &#8220;sad day in Illinois&#8221;. The bill was called in the Senate for a final vote the last day of veto session.<\/p>\n<p>The bill allows patients with a terminal diagnosis who are expected to live less than six months the ability to have a fatal dose of medicine prescribed that they can take whenever and wherever they want to.<\/p>\n<p>Halbrook released this statement in response to the bill signing:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It\u2019s a sad day in Illinois.\u00a0\u00a0Like Governor Pritzker\u2019s expansion of abortion, making Illinois a travel destination for the procedure, there is no doubt that Illinois will become a travel destination for assisted suicide. He has turned Illinois into the state people come to in order to end life. It\u2019s morally reprehensible.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bad things pass when no one is watching. The Senate Democrats debated the bill at 3 am on Halloween morning. In less than an hour, with the bare minimum of votes, the bill passed the Senate.\u00a0\u00a0This is no way to pass serious legislation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The new law undermines that fundamental trust between a doctor and patient and infringes on the rights of conscious of healthcare professionals. SB 1950\u00a0mandates that Illinois doctors and healthcare professionals refer patients for assisted suicide if they\u2019re unwilling to do it themselves\u2014even if such a referral violates their deepest religious convictions and their sacred calling to heal.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is no need for this legislation. Our medical professionals know how to comfort the dying with compassion, allowing them time to grieve and have final moments with loved ones.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like other bills that have expanded the culture of death, this bill may eventually lead to offering assisted suicide to people simply weary of living or who feel they are a burden to others. Already in Canada, euthanasia enthusiasts are arguing to allow minors to select assisted suicide. These actions are the actions of a Godless society.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I will do everything I can to raise awareness and push for a full repeal of the law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>St. Rep. Adam Niemerg of Dieterich also opposed the legislation. Here are his thoughts&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>(NIEMERG)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3209 additional-class\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thexradio.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/adam-niemerg-2023-150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"100\" height=\"150\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere is no question that the number of illnesses included in our physician assisted suicide law will grow and grow over time,\u201d Niemerg said. \u201cAnd before too long, we will have medical professionals advising patients to end their lives rather be a burden on our healthcare system. We are indeed headed on a very dark path in Illinois. Life is sacred. We are more than dollars and cents. But sadly, the Democrats who control our state government have shown their total contempt for the sanctity of human life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Niemerg noted the Illinois State Medical Society has voiced its opposition to this dangerous legislation, emphasizing that it undermines the ethical foundations of medical practice. By legitimizing suicide, Senate Bill 1950 sends a harmful message to our youth, suggesting that life is meaningless and valueless.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe must prioritize the value of life and provide compassionate care to those in need, rather than enabling despair,\u201d Niemerg stated. \u201cAre we truly prepared to allow this atrocity to take root in Illinois? If we embrace this path, we risk a significant increase in suicides. We have not thought the consequences of this new law through and we as a society will regret the actions Gov.
