Effingham High School was down by a 9-2 count to start this game against Charleston Tuesday evening in a game heard on 979XFM<\/p>\n

But the Hearts went on a run, edging out to a 12-11 opening quarter lead. Cannon Bockhorn and Jenner Pals knocked in a three-pointer each while Cole Phillips and Nolan Fearday put in a basket each and Brady McDaniel tallied two free throws.<\/p>\n

EHS then moved into a 27-19 halftime lead. Jude Traub scored on a three-pointer while Phillips and Fearday put in two baskets each for four points.<\/p>\n

But the second half was all Effingham for a 62-35 victory.<\/p>\n

The Hearts’ Jake Niebrugge, who didn’t score in the opening half, came alive with two three-pointers, a regular basket and two free throws for 10 in the quarter. Brady McDaniel nailed a three-pointer and the Hearts went up 44-23.<\/p>\n

EHS did not have a turnover in the middle two quarters.<\/p>\n

With under three minutes to go in the game, the Hearts pushed their lead to 30 and a running clock was in play.<\/p>\n

Niebrugge finished with 10 points on three field goals and two free throws while Phillips also hit 10 points with four field goals and two free throws. Eight other players\u00a0 scored in the contest.<\/p>\n

The Hearts finished with 41.8 percent from the field and 69.2 percent at the line. EHS hit nine three-pointers as Niebrugge, Phillips, McDaniel and Traub had two each. EHS is now 1-0 in the Apollo Conference, 3-3 overall.<\/p>\n

Charleston was led by Tyler Oakley with 13. The Trojans connected on only 35.1 percent from the field but were 71.4 percent at the line.<\/p>\n

At St. Anthony<\/strong><\/p>\n

St. Anthony tallied an easy victory over Cowden-Herrick\/Beecher City by a 63-28 tally Tuesday evening.<\/p>\n

The Bulldogs ran out to a 21-9 opening quarter lead and led 42-17 at halftime.<\/p>\n

Myles Waldhoff scored 11 opening quarter points, hitting two three-pointers, two regular baskets and a free throw. Alex Mayer and Keenan Griffith added a three-pointer each.<\/p>\n

The Bulldogs had a 21-point second period as six players scored. Aiden Lauritzen took over the scoring with six points while Griffith added five. Waldhoff connected on another three-pointer.<\/p>\n

St. Anthony led 42-17 at halftime and 55-20 going into the final period.<\/p>\n

Three players scored in double figures for the Bulldogs. Waldhoff hit seven field goals, four of those three-pointers, and was one of one at the line. Lauritzen added 10 with five field goals and Griffith also had 10 with three field goals that included two three-pointers, and two of two at the line.<\/p>\n

Cowden-Herrick\/Beecher City was led by Griffin Vaughn with eight on four field goals.<\/p>\n

In junior varsity play, St. Anthony was an 81-28 winner. The Bulldogs were led by Alex Mayer with 16, Charlie Hoene with 15, Will Vonderheide with 13 and Blake Verdeyen with 10.<\/p>\n

CHBC was led by Calame with 15.<\/p>\n

In freshman action, St. Anthony was a 59-10 winner. Camden Bloemer and Curtis Tingley scored 10 each.<\/p>\n

CHBC was led by Witteborg with four.<\/p>\n
