MATTOON — Effingham High School edged Mattoon 2-1 in soccer action Tuesday.<\/p>\n

“This was a must-win game to keep our Apollo Conference hopes alive and the team came together and played a very strong game from start to finish,” said EHS soccer coach Logan Arney. “We had some unlucky breaks with six shots hitting the cross bar and 21 shots on goal on 39 shots.<\/p>\n

“Mattoon’s goalie had an impressive performance but we were able to finish on top.”<\/p>\n

Maicol Sefton scored one goal and assisted on one to Andrew Wagoner who scored the second goal.<\/p>\n

Goalkeeper Brady Wilson had a strong showing with seven saves.<\/p>\n

“Looking ahead, we travel to Hillsboro Wednesday and then host Mount Zion Thursday for another very important Apollo Conference matchup,” said Arney. “Come out and support us on Thursday.”<\/p>\n

A little side note, Dennis Carie’s son Alex is the coach at Mattoon. The Green Wave had beaten the Hearts three weeks ago. Alex Carie was a player for the Hearts before graduating and is now the head coach for the Green Wave.<\/p>\n

At Arthur<\/strong><\/p>\n

Effingham St. Anthony and Arthur-Lovington\/Atwood-Hammond played to a 2-2 tie Tuesday.<\/p>\n

ALAH went up 2-0 in the first 11 minutes but St. Anthony responded two minutes later with a goal from Michael Wright and an assist from Noah Jansen.<\/p>\n

“After some adjustments at halftime, we were able to tie the game when Noah took a shot from the top of the box when a loose ball ended up there,” said St. Anthony Coach Martin Reyes. “Great team contributions by Issac Fallert, Jackson Schultz, Graham Miller, Cole Adams and Ike Daiber.<\/p>\n

“We were able to hold on to the tie even through our injures. I’m very proud of the team’s effort.”<\/p>\n

ALAH’s junior varsity was a 7-2 winner.<\/p>\n

The Bulldogs two goals came from Joy LaSarge and Graham Miller.<\/p>\n

“Many junior varsity players played well and those included Myra Christie,\u00a0 Reilly Miller, Bryn Bartimus and Rosie Warner.”<\/p>\n

The next match for the Bulldogs will be Saturday as they play host to Altamont at 10 a.m.<\/p>\n

At Teutopolis<\/strong><\/p>\n

Teutopolis and Newton finished with a 2-2 draw in Tuesday action.<\/p>\n

“Our goals were scored by Gavin Buening off an assist from Gavin Pals and then Isaac McWhorter,” said T-town Coach Aaron Wendt. “Goalkeeper Jake Kocher had nine saves.”<\/p>\n

The varsity Shoes are now 11-2-3 on the season.<\/p>\n

They will be back in action Saturday traveling to Breese Mater Dei. The junior varsity will open play at 10 a.m. with the varsity afterwards.<\/p>\n

At Salem<\/strong><\/p>\n

Altamont traveled to Salem to face a good Wildcats team and fell by a 7-1 count Tuesday.<\/p>\n

“We came out on all cylinders scoring just two minutes in on a goal by Juan Fulk,” said Altamont Coach Eric Morales. “We continued to move the ball very well up the field finding many opportunities, just unable to find the back of the net.”<\/p>\n

“Salem struck back, netting three solid goals, taking the game into the half with a 3-1 lead. They continued their great work putting another four goals in but not after some hard work from us on the defensive end.<\/p>\n

“Adam Wolf stood strong in goal, saving multiple one-on-one attempts and a few rockers that echoed loudly through the park off of his gloves,” said Morales. “Adam held the game for us for quite some time to keep them within reach.<\/p>\n

“It was a hard-fought game and our best game thus far.”<\/p>\n
