He was 79.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though he\u2019d been out of power for 26 years \u2014 more time than the two decades he spent in office as an elected official \u2014 the former governor was still active in Illinois political circles until the end of his life, heading a bipartisan program to develop up-and-coming leaders from across Illinois.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a statement Sunday, Edgar\u2019s family confirmed he\u2019d died \u201cfrom complications related to treatment for pancreatic cancer,\u201d a diagnosis he\u2019d made public in February.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe are deeply grateful for the love, support and kindness so many have shown to Jim and our family over these last several months,\u201d the statement said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite his failing health, Edgar still made public appearances in the last months of his life, including in August at his 2025 Edgar Fellows program in Urbana, though the former governor had to make an emergency room trip during the gathering.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A moderate Republican, Edgar became symbolic of a near-extinct breed of GOP politics in the years since he left office. He wasn\u2019t the only elected Republican in Illinois with a pro-choice stance on abortion, but Edgar and his contemporaries were still in the minority at a time when the GOP was still a powerhouse in state politics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But as hardline Republican politics became ascendant nationally, the GOP\u2019s power in Illinois dwindled, making Edgar somewhat of a political nomad. The former governor became a vocal critic of President Donald Trump, and last year campaigned with other Republicans for then-Vice President Kamala Harris\u2019 unsuccessful bid for the White House.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Edgar\u2019s bipartisan leadership program and disavowing hard-right figures like Trump made the former governor plenty of allies in the Democratic party, including Gov. JB Pritzker, who said Sunday that he considered Edgar a \u201cfriend and mentor.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHis commitment to reaching across the aisle in service of the people of Illinois undeniably made our state better,\u201d Pritzker said. \u201cNow more than ever, we should channel that spirit and resolve to live as Governor Edgar did: with honesty, integrity, and an enduring respect for all.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The governor said he would direct flags across Illinois to be lowered to half-staff in honor of Edgar\u2019s passing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Edgar\u2019s death follows that of his immediate successor, former Gov. George Ryan, in May.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Edgar was born in rural northeast Oklahoma but grew up in Charleston, Illinois. He later attended college in his adopted hometown at Eastern Illinois University, where the future governor was elected student body president.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But that wasn\u2019t his first victory at the ballot box; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jimedgar.com\/early-years\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to his website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Edgar was in first grade when he ran Dwight D. Eisenhower\u2019s 1952 campaign in his elementary school\u2019s mock election, cementing his lifelong status as a Republican, though his parents were Democrats.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After college, Edgar served as an intern and then staffer for Republican legislative leaders before himself getting elected to the Illinois House in 1976 at age 30. In the middle of Edgar\u2019s second term, then-Republican Gov. Jim Thompson tapped the young lawmaker to become his legislative liaison.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thompson then appointed Edgar as secretary of state in 1981, an office he held for a decade until he was sworn in as governor in 1991.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a public appearance in Springfield on May 28 at the Illinois State Library, state leaders honored Edgar\u2019s commitment to literacy and to the processes of government.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the event, Pritzker told the story of his first meeting with Edgar after Pritzker was elected governor in 2018, just months after the state ended a costly two-year budget impasse between Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and Democrats in the General Assembly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHe said one really important thing to me,\u201d Pritzker recalled. \u201cHe said: You really only have one critical job as governor of the state of Illinois, and that\u2019s pass a budget.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But Edgar\u2019s most enduring contribution to the state of Illinois, Pritzker said, could be summed up in a well-known Edgar quote: \u201cTo me, the best politics is good government.\u201d Pritzker said it was reflected in Edgar\u2019s decision to maintain many of the staff that were hired by his Democratic predecessor when he became secretary of state.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThat view \u2014 that honest loyalty to the people of Illinois \u2014 is what makes Jim Edgar an icon no matter what party you belong to,\u201d Pritzker said. \u201cHe has not only guided his every move in a bipartisan fashion, but he has also kept true to his own moral compass.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The event at the state library was called to dedicate a reading room in Edgar\u2019s honor. When he was secretary of state, he said one of his favorite parts of the job was being state librarian. But the library at the time was \u201chid away\u201d in another building on the Capitol Complex.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>READING ROOM<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNow, I mean, it was terrible,\u201d he said. \u201cI went over there, and I thought, this is not where it should be.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Edgar\u2019s political leadership ensured the library would be funded in 1985, then dedicated in 1990.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI didn\u2019t get to build many buildings,\u201d Edgar quipped. \u201cWe were broke at the time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Edgar brokered the deal with Thompson and helped advocate for the funding source \u2014 a sales tax paid on private auto sales. But, Edgar said, when his team sat down to review the legislation enacting the public works program that year, funding for the library was initially absent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ultimately, their staffers connected, and the funding was included. He gave the leaders in attendance advice as the session was slated to conclude just days later.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBut what I want to remind you,\u201d he advised the state leaders in attendance, \u201cdon\u2019t think just because they told you a month ago, they\u2019re going to do it. They might forget. So, in the next four days, you better just check on the people who promised you they were going to do these things.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Edgar was also the lead architect of the state\u2019s 50-year plan to adequately fund pensions by the year 2045. The measure \u2014 which has since been dubbed the \u201cEdgar ramp\u201d \u2014 was put in place to direct state funds to a pension system that had been shortchanged for decades.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While lawmakers from both parties have criticized the plan, none have put forward a plan to replace it in the three decades since it passed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias recalled several of Edgar\u2019s other contributions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHe made our roads safer by toughening penalties for drunk driving. He spearheaded the effort that requires Illinois drivers to have car insurance. He drafted legislation that made it easier for companies to incorporate in Illinois,\u201d he said at the event. \u201cBut his true passion is why we&#8217;re all here today: his love for lifelong learning through our libraries.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Edgar took the microphone, he quipped about his \u201cchemo hairline,\u201d as well as the party of the state leaders who were singing his praises.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou know, I&#8217;m glad I lived long enough to have that many Democrats say such nice things about me,\u201d he said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But he closed his remarks with another piece of advice to the people of Illinois: \u201cMake use of this building.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLibraries are only good if people are in them,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ceremony ended with Edgar shaking hands and admiring the plaque that would be placed outside the reading room\u2019s doors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI feel very, very honored today that my name is at least gonna be on the wall here, and people are gonna say, \u2018Well, who is that guy?\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cNow in a minute, they&#8217;re gonna unveil this plaque. I came here yesterday and looked at it, and I love this plaque. I have hair. And I hope, someday, that we\u2019ll defy medical science, and I&#8217;ll have hair again. He was a man of integrity and strong moral character who dedicated his career to public service. His contributions to Illinois will not be forgotten. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this time of loss. We are grateful for his years of leadership and the example of service he leaves behind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">State Senator Steve McClure (R-Springfield) released the following statement on the passing of former Governor Jim Edgar:<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI am deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Jim Edgar. As one of our greatest governors, he increased adoptions of foster children by 500 percent, reformed welfare, and heightened sentences for murderers and sex offenders. I first met him when I was a young man while my mother was serving as his director of personnel at the Secretary of State\u2019s Office. Governor Edgar is one of the people that inspired me to enter into public service. He worked tirelessly to encourage the next generation of leaders and was always available to speak with the high school students taking part in my Youth Advisory Council. I was honored to be an Edgar Fellow. My family and I send our deepest condolences to Brenda Edgar and the entire Edgar family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias commented on the passing of former Governor Jim Edgar:<\/p>\n<p>Jim Edgar was an amazing man and an incredible public servant. More importantly, he was a great friend and advisor to me. His leadership will be missed, his friendship even more so. My family and I send our deepest condolences to his family.<\/p>\n<p>Jim spoke frequently about the importance of the \u2018Three C\u2019s\u2019: Civility, Compromise and Compassion \u2013 words that resonate more than ever today.\u00a0Together, he believed they served as the foundation of a healthy democracy, knowing that as Americans, we work best when we collaborate and work out our differences, show compassion toward those who need help, and treat one another with respect and dignity. For Jim, compromise was not surrender; compassion was not weakness; and civility was not placation. Together, these principles give us the space to stand firm in our beliefs and to speak passionately without being disrespected, dehumanized or attacked.<\/p>\n<p>As we mourn his death, we can honor Jim by choosing to believe that &#8211; regardless of our differences &#8211; a better world is possible through kindness.
