CHARLESTON — Effingham High School won the Charleston Red & Gold Soccer Tournament Saturday.<\/p>\n

The Hearts defeated Champaign\u00a0 St. Thomas More 1-0 to reach the championship match. That’s where EHS took down Mattoon 4-0 for the title.<\/p>\n

The Hearts had a total of 15 goals over the tournament and allowed only one goal.<\/p>\n

In the first match of the day, the Hearts took down St. Thomas More 1-0 with the lone goal scored by Maicol Sefton coming off an assist from Sebastian Simoni. Brady Wilson kept the clean sheet with one save on the day.<\/p>\n

The championship match was against Mattoon and the Hearts scored four goals while holding the Green Wave to zero. Sefton, Gage Kinder, Camilo Aden and Simoni all scored a goal each.<\/p>\n

“Andrew Wagoner showed his team first mentality setting up two assists,” said EHS Coach Logan Arney. ” Maicol added to his goal scored with an assist as well as Kael Allison chipping in with an assist. Goalkeeper Brad Wilson had another strong performance with a six-save clean sheet.<\/p>\n

“The team continues to show a lot of promise and strong teamwork. We ended the tournament with our best game where the team showed unselfish play through quality passing, defending and setting each other and the team up for success.<\/p>\n

“We look ahead to the week when we hit the road to take on Apollo Conference opponent Mahomet-Seymour Tuesday. We then go to St. Anthony Wednesday and have our first home game on Thursday against Vandalia. Make plans to come support the team this week.”<\/p>\n

At Charleston<\/strong><\/p>\n

Teutopolis competed in the Charleston Red and Golf Tournament and split on the last day with a win and a loss to finish sixth.<\/p>\n

The Shoes beat\u00a0 Danville 1-0 in the first match of the day. The goal was scored by Landyn Buening with an assist from Gavin Buening. Goalkeeper Jake Kocher had eight saves and had his second clean sheet of the season.<\/p>\n

The Shoes then fell to Newton 3-1 in the second and final match of the day. The goal was scored by Tucker Dhom.<\/p>\n

“We are now 2-1-1 on the season,” said T-town Coach Aaron Wendt. “We begin regular season play hosting Charleston Tuesday.”<\/p>\n
