TEUTOPOLIS — Effingham High School captured a victory at the Teutopolis Boys Basketball Shootout Saturday in games heard on 979XFM.<\/p>\n

The Hearts took on Sullivan and was a 67-43 winner.<\/p>\n

EHS ran out to an 18-4 opening quarter lead behind a three-point barrage. Jenner Pals connected on two while Ian Kinkelaar and Jake Niebrugge put in one each.<\/p>\n

In the second quarter, Sullivan came back with a 17-10 run as Camden Watkins put in 14 of those 17 points on two three-pointers and four regular baskets. The Hearts still led 28-21.<\/p>\n

EHS then had a 21-9 third quarter surge as Jude Traub hit three trifectas and Pals put in two more.<\/p>\n

The Hearts finished out with an 18-13 final quarter.<\/p>\n

Pals led the way with 20 points on seven field goals, five from beyond the arc, and one of two at the line. Traub tallied 18 points on six three-pointers. EHS finished with 15 three-pointers in the contest.<\/p>\n

Sulivan was led by Watkins with 22 points.<\/p>\n

Troy Triad handed Teutopolis a 48-38 loss in the final game of the day.<\/p>\n

The two teams were tied at 8-8 in the opening quarter. Triad then broke loose with a 21-7 run to lead 29-15 at halftime. T-town had a slight 14-9 third quarter edge but Triad finished out with a 10-9 final period.<\/p>\n

Mick Niebrugge led the Wooden Shoes with 12 points on four field goals, one a three-pointer, and three of four at the line. Gavin Addis chipped in with 10.<\/p>\n

T-town hit only 33.3 percent for the game while Triad was hitting at a 51.3 clip.<\/p>\n

In the opening game, Casey-Westfield bounced Tri-City 73-26. The third contest went to Alton 56-54 in overtime over Decatur MacArthur.<\/p>\n

Newton traveled to Pana Saturday and fell to the homestanders by a 54-32 tally.<\/p>\n

The Panthers edged out to an 11-8 opening quarter lead and led 23-21 at halftime as Newton came back with a slight edge.<\/p>\n

Pana then had a 20-5 third quarter run to put the game away.<\/p>\n

Newton had only one player in double figures. Kody Bergbower hit six field goals and one of three at the line for 13 points.<\/p>\n

The Eagles fall to 9-17 on the season and return to action hosting Casey-Westfield Tuesday.<\/p>\n
