South Central took an 18-15 first half lead against Effingham St. Anthony in high school boys basketball Tuesday evening.<\/p>\n

But the Bulldogs came back in the second half with a 41-22 run to claim a 56-40 victory as two National Trail Conference teams met at the Enlow Center.<\/p>\n

The Cougars moved into a 13-5 opening quarter lead. Westin Neilson put in two three-pointers while Kage Hiestand scored four points.<\/p>\n

Although the Bulldogs came back with a 10-5 second quarter, South Central still held the halftime lead. Brody Markley hit a three-pointer and Seth Bergmann put in a basket for South Central’s only points.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Ryan Schmidt got going offensively for the Bulldogs with five points on a basket and three of four at the line. Will Fearday knocked in a three-pointer.<\/p>\n

Schmidt continued on in the third quarter run with five baskets, one a three-pointer and three of four at the line for 14 of his team’s 20 points. Miles Waldhoff connected on a three.<\/p>\n

Then it was W. Fearday who went on a final quarter run. Fearday hit three from beyond the arc and put in two baskets for 13 of the Bulldogs’ 21 points.<\/p>\n

W. Fearday finished with eight baskets, five from three-point range, for 21 points. Schmidt added 19 on six field goals, one from beyond the arc, and six of eight at the line for 19.<\/p>\n

South Central was led by Neilson with 14 points on five baskets, four of those three-pointers. Markley chipped in with 12.<\/p>\n

In the junior varsity contest, St. Anthony won 73-30. Waldhoff scored 15, Will Bierman 12 and Jonny Gannaway 10 for the Bulldogs.<\/p>\n

South Central was led by Byers with 12.<\/p>\n

At Effingham<\/strong><\/p>\n

It’s been a hard season for Effingham and that continued Tuesday evening in a game heard on 979XFM.<\/p>\n

Charleston’s Luke Bonstetter drove to the basket for a layup with around four seconds remaining in the game to take a 57-56 lead. The Hearts then got the ball with 1.1 seconds and got a three-point look that didn’t go in and the Trojans claimed that 57-56 victory.<\/p>\n

The Hearts held a 16-13 opening quarter lead as Max Flack and Nolan Fearday scored four points each, Jenner Pals hit a three-pointer and Ian Kinkelaar put in a basket and a free throw, also for three.<\/p>\n

But the Trojans came back with a 14-8 second quarter run as Luke Bonstetter and Burk Anderson scored seven points each. Charleston held a 27-24 halftime lead.<\/p>\n

But here came the Hearts. In the third quarter, EHS went on a 19-11 run to lead 43-38. Pals connected on three trifectas while Niebrugge scored five and Kinkelaar added a three-pointer.<\/p>\n

The Trojans then went on a 19-13 final quarter run as Bonstetter scored six and Andrew Kuykendall, who had only tallied one basket through the first three quarters, went on a six point run. Alex Kuykendall hit a three-pointer and Tyler Oakley put in four points.<\/p>\n

EHS finished with 13 in the final quarter as Jude Traub hit two three-pointers, a regular basket and a free throw for nine points.<\/p>\n

Charleston was led by Bonstetter with 21 points and Oakley and Burk Anderson with 12 points each. Charleston improved to 3-5 in the conference, 11-16 overall.<\/p>\n

EHS was led by Pals with 12 points on four field goals, all from three-point range, and Niebrugge with 10.  The Hearts hit nine three pointers in the contest while the Trojans finished with six.<\/p>\n

The Hearts dropped to 2-7 in the Apollo Conference, 6-22 overall.<\/p>\n
