CHARLESTON — Effingham High School ran out to an 18-7 opening quarter lead and captured a 70-17 victory over Charleston in an Apollo Conference girls basketball contest Tuesday evening.<\/p>\n

The Hearts got on a tear behind five players scoring in the opening quarter. Bria Beals hit a three-pointer and a free throw for four while Tessa Raddatz and Averie Wolfe also connected from beyond the arc. Bella Austin hit two baskets for four and Alyssa Martin added a basket and a free throw for three points in the quarter.<\/p>\n

The lead went to 43-7 at halftime. Wolfe contributed seven points while Sidney Donaldson and Austin scored on three baskets for six each. Raddatz added another three-pointer.<\/p>\n

The Hearts finished out with a 27-10 second half. Raddatz added two more three-pointers in the final quarter while Hayes put in one from beyond the arc in both the third and fourth quarters.<\/p>\n

Coach Jeff Schafer’s squad had five players in double figures. Raddatz hit four three-pointers for 12 points while Wolf connected on two three-pointers and three regular baskets, also for 12.<\/p>\n

Martin, Donaldson and Austin all finished with 10 points each.<\/p>\n

EHS improved to 21-7 on the season.<\/p>\n

Effingam also claimed the junior varsity contest, 48-13. The Hearts were led by Maci Hayes with 17 points and Drew Weis with 10.<\/p>\n

Brownstown\/St. Elmo traveled to Nokomis and fell to the homestanding team, 52-36 Tuesday evening.<\/p>\n

Nokomis held a 13-8 opening quarter lead. BSE came back with a 14-12 second period run behind Dayana Haslett’s eight points and four by Madi Miller to pull within 25-22.<\/p>\n

But Nokomis went on an 11-5 third quarter run and finished with a 14-9 final period.<\/p>\n

Haslett was the lone player for the Bombers in double figures with six field goals, one a three-pointer, and three of four at the line for 16. Miller finished with nine.<\/p>\n

Kendra Hayes led the Hatchets with 21 points while Ellie Wittenberg had 14 and Sam Hayes 12.<\/p>\n

The Hatchets are 19-6 on the season.<\/p>\n
