BROWNSTOWN — Sigel St. Michael came out the champion of the Eighth-Grade Boys National Trail Conference Tournament Thursday evening.<\/p>\n

St. Michael stepped out to a 16-9 opening quarter lead on Stewardson-Strasburg and held a 31-12 halftime lead. The Sharpshooters went on for the 49-37 victory.<\/p>\n

Dasenbrock led the way for the winners with 14 points while Altigilbers added nine.<\/p>\n

Stew-Stras was led by Hille with 11 and Spannagel with eight. Stew-Stras drops to 16-5 on the season.<\/p>\n

The third place game went to South Central over North Clay, 46-38.<\/p>\n

St. Elmo\/Brownstown was the consolation champion with a 40-24 win over Effingham Sacred Heart.<\/p>\n

At Greenville<\/strong><\/p>\n

Effingham St. Anthony moved into the championship game of the GreenvilleEighth-Grade Tournament with a victory Thursday evening.<\/p>\n

The Bullpups edged Salem, 43-41. St. Anthony moved into a 12-5 opening quarter lead as B. Verdeyen scored four points and C. Tingley and C. Hoene hit a three-pointer each.<\/p>\n

St. Anthony led 22-11 at halftime.<\/p>\n

But in the second half, here came Salem with a 16-6 third quarter run to pull within 30-27. B. Verdeyen scored five points and C. Bierman hit a three-pointer for St. Anthony’s only third quarter points.<\/p>\n

In the final period, Salem had a 14-13 edge but couldn’t make up that first half lead by the Bullpups.<\/p>\n

B. Verdeyen led the way with 18 points on seven field goals and four of six at the line.<\/p>\n

Staunton won the second game over Greenville, 32-25.<\/p>\n

St. Anthony and Staunton will meet today at 7 p.m. for the championship.<\/p>\n

Salem and Greenville square off for third place at 6. Aviston and Piasa meet at 5 for the consolation championship.<\/p>\n

Jasper County won the seventh-grade game 46-30 and improved to 5-14 on the season.<\/p>\n

Jacob Guzman scored 23 and Alex Keller 13 for the winners.<\/p>\n

In the eighth-grade contest, Jasper County easily won 63-18.<\/p>\n

Preston Harris led with 11 while Landon Gentry added nine and Brendan Emmerich eight. <\/p>\n

Jasper County evened its record at 10-10.<\/p>\n

Jasper County’s seventh-grade team will be competing in regional play Saturday at Teutopolis.<\/p>\n

The Wooden Shoes won the seventh-grade contest 29-19. The score was tied at 12-12 at halftime before T-town had a 12-3 third quarter run.<\/p>\n

Mason Giles was the lone Shoes player in double figures with 14.<\/p>\n

In eighth-grade action, T-town ran out to a 26-13 halftime lead and never looked back in a 51-36 victory.<\/p>\n

Sammy Probst led the Shoes with 17 points while Kale Goeckner added 16 and Blake Niemerg 10.<\/p>\n

At Neoga<\/strong><\/p>\n

Dieterich claimed both victories over Neoga in Thursday evening competition.<\/p>\n

Dieterich was a winner in the seventh-grade contest, 29-28.<\/p>\n

Neoga held a 10-9 opening quarter lead before Dieterich came back with a 12-2 second period to lead 21-12 at halfitme. Dieterich held off a second half challenge by Neoga.<\/p>\n

Uthell and Goeckner led the winners with eight points each.<\/p>\n

Neoga was led by Matusas with 12 and Nohren with 11.<\/p>\n

In eighth-grade action, Dieterich took a 40-30 victory. Neoga led 11-8 after the opening quarter and 17-14 at halftime.<\/p>\n

But Dieterich came back with a 10-4 third period and finished strong with a 16-4 final quarter.<\/p>\n

Goeckner led with 17 while McQueen added 11.<\/p>\n

Neoga was led by Brody Strobl with 21.<\/p>\n
