SUMMARY:Golf Benefit for HSHS St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital Foundation
DESCRIPTION:PrintThe HSHS St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital Foundation is hosting its 17th annual Golf Benefit Friday\, Oct. 2 at the Effingham Country Club.  The HSHS St. Anthony’s Foundation expresses its thanks to its golf benefit sponsor Air Evac Lifeteam/GMR. \nRegistration begins at 10 a.m.\, with lunch being served from 10:30 to 11:40 a.m. as well as a putting contest.  After a brief welcome and presentation at 11:40 a.m.\, the noon tee-off begins the four-person scramble\, which consists of 32 teams of four players.  Golfers can participate in mulligans\, on-course contests and more activities.  A new feature this year will be six mobile mini golf holes placed throughout the course.  The event ends with a post-event reception featuring a meal and announcements of tournament and contest winners. \nAs a fundraising event\, costs of the golf benefit will be underwritten by sponsors who support the hospital and its health care initiatives.  Philanthropy Manager Michael Wall said\, “Donors play an integral role in enhancing the care HSHS St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital provides to our patients and community each year.  For example\, funds raised have supported the purchase of surgical and state-of-the-art medical equipment\, as well as funded patient transportation\,” he said.  “This year we are supporting the needs of future generations by raising funds for our Center for Pediatric Therapy\, which offers innovative treatments catered specifically to the unique needs of children in a child-friendly environment\, promoting development\, improving mobility and encouraging independence.  We invite anyone interested in supporting our community hospital to consider sponsoring or participating in our golf event.” \nThose not available or not interested in golfing who would still like to support the hospital can be “Community Support” sponsors and/or purchase raffle tickets for a number of prizes which will be raffled off.  You need not be present to win.  Raffle tickets are $5 each\, five tickets for $20 or 30 tickets for $100. \nArea residents and community advocates who would like to become a sponsor\, enter a team or purchase raffle tickets can find more information or register at stanthonyshospital.org/golf by Sept. 25.  For more information\, contact Michael Wall\, Philanthropy Manager\, at 217-347-1854 or email michael.wall@hshs.org.

SUMMARY:Lewis Artwork on Display at Library
DESCRIPTION:PrintEffingham resident Melody Lewis will display her artwork through September 30th in the Richard and Diane Siemer Family Vault Art Gallery at the Effingham Public Library. \nBorn and raised in Effingham County\, Melody left Illinois after college\, spending 23 years in Orlando\, Florida\, and nine years in Northern California before returning home in 2024.  Her lifelong creativity began with a simple love of doodling. \n“I have always doodled since childhood\,” Lewis said. “I accepted any blank space as a personal challenge that the space needed to be filled.” \nOver the years\, painting remained an outlet\, from school play backdrops and signage to a cartoon character painted on her father’s hot rod and an entire school bus for a martial arts school. \nAt 50\, after her children had grown up\, a painting class reignited her passion. “I took a paint class\, and it ignited that old flame in me\,” she said. “It made me realize I once had a passion for painting.” \nToday\, Lewis draws inspiration from beauty\, simplicity\, and nature\, often turning photographs or emotional moments into paintings. \n“Anytime I see a photo or something that stirs an emotion in me\, I think\, ‘Could I paint that?’” she said.  “Could I do it justice? Even if I can’t\, I do my best to recreate it onto the canvas with my twist to capture that emotion.” \nFor Lewis\, art is also a way to connect with others and spark conversation. “Art is a statement piece for people to open a conversation\,” she said. “The artist is putting it out there\, knowing it will be judged—some good\, some bad—making it extremely personal.  We understand it’s not for everyone. No one ever sees it the way we see it.” \nLewis focuses on capturing the beauty she sees in the world and sharing that perspective with others. \nThe art exhibit is free and a library card is not required to view the exhibit. \nContact Art Gallery Coordinator Oran Colwell at 217-342-2464 or oran@effinghamlibrary.org for more information.
