DESCRIPTION:PrintSongs of the Illinois Freedom Road is the powerful new musical performance featuring the songs\, stories\, and struggles of the Illinois Underground Railroad.  Don’t miss this performance at the Lincoln Log Cabin State Historic Site’s Visitor Center Auditorium on Saturday\, August 23\, at 2:00 p.m. \nThe show\, with award-winning folk musician Chris Vallillo\, features rare first-person accounts of freedom seekers who passed through Illinois.  Highlighted stories include John and Mary Little\, who traveled on foot 140 miles to Chicago\, and George Burroughs\, a black Canadian who worked on the Illinois Central Railroad where he helped smuggle escapees to freedom.  Vallillo extensively researched the subject using primary source documents such as the 1857 Slave Narratives of Canada and the WPA Slave Narratives as well as the most recent scholarship on the subject.  Vallillo combines these powerful stories with eleven historic songs that were sung by the enslaved to inspire and share knowledge among themselves. \nThis event is partially funded by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council Agency. \nJourney to Freedom: Illinois’ Underground Railroad is a new temporary exhibit from Looking for Lincoln; check it out in the Sargent Gallery of the Visitor Center! \nThe Lincoln Log Cabin State Historic Site is located at 402 South Lincoln Highway Road\, Lerna\, IL  62440.  For more information call 217-345-1845\, or visit lincolnlogcabin.org

DESCRIPTION:PrintA special exhibit at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum lets visitors explore history using their eyes\, ears and hands.  It transforms images from Lincoln’s life into three-dimensional objects that visitors can touch while listening to audio presentations explaining his accomplishments and enduring legacy. \n“Lincoln: Sight\, Sound & Touch” runs through Aug. 24.  Everyone can enjoy its unique features\, but they offer an especially powerful experience for visitors with impaired vision.  This travelling exhibit was created by Tactile Images in cooperation with the National Federation of the Blind. \nThe ALPLM is supplementing the exhibit with touchable facsimiles of artifacts\, such as Lincoln’s briefcase\, a life mask and Tad Lincoln’s model cannon.  Authentic Lincoln artifacts from the ALPLM collection will also be on display\, including many commercial items with Lincoln’s image. \nThe museum also has worked with Tactile Images to create a brand-new piece that focuses on Lincoln and the Gettysburg Address.  It will remain at the presidential museum after the exhibit closes\, giving the ALPLM a new feature to offer blind and visually impaired visitors on special occasions. \n“We firmly believe in the idea of ‘Abe for all’ – that everyone should have a chance to learn about Lincoln’s achievements and how they affect America today\,” said Christina Shutt\, executive director of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum.  “This exhibit delivers on that by offering a fun\, informative experience that everyone can enjoy\, even if they cannot see it.  We’re especially happy that part of it will remain at the ALPLM for years to come. \nA primary theme of the exhibit is the way Lincoln’s image has been used to sell products from cars to cigarettes to war bonds.  Visitors will find an array of ads and posters that have been transformed into three-dimensional objects studded with sensors.  It also includes touchable models of a sculpture from the Lincoln Memorial\, Lincoln’s face and hands and a Lincoln medal.  Touching the sensors will turn on audio descriptions of the object.  Buttons on each panel let visitors hear explanations of the history and significance of each item. \n“Lincoln: Sight\, Sound & Touch” is included with regular admission to the museum as part of the ALPLM’s celebration of its 20th anniversary.  There is no additional charge. \nThe mission of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum is to inspire civic engagement through the diverse lens of Illinois history and share with the world the life and legacy of Abraham Lincoln.  We pursue this mission through a combination of rigorous scholarship and high-tech showmanship built on the bedrock of the ALPLM’s unparalleled collection of historical materials – roughly 13 million items from all eras of Illinois history. \nFor more information\, visit www.PresidentLincoln.illinois.gov.  You can follow the ALPLM on Facebook\, X/Twitter and Instagram.

DESCRIPTION:PrintA new exhibit highlighting the courageous stories of freedom seekers and the multi-racial conductors who assisted them on the Underground Railroad in Illinois are featured in a new exhibit Journey to Freedom:  Illinois’ Underground Railroad.  This will be on display in the Lincoln Log Cabin State Historic Site’s Visitor Center – Sargent Gallery\, now through December 31. \nThis exhibit tells selected stories of freedom seekers\, conductors and communities in Illinois that were part of the journey to freedom on the Illinois Underground Railroad.  Using photos\, videos\, maps\, personal stories\, and illustrations created specifically for the exhibit\, visitors will learn the about the people and communities who took part in this hidden history.  Highlighted stories include freedom seekers John and Eliza Little\, who traveled barefoot through Illinois to Canada to gain their freedom\, or conductors like Henry who worked for Abraham Lincoln\, and Mary Ann King Brown who helped the enslaved to freedom in the Springfield\, Quincy and Galena areas.  Many of the known communities are included\, from Cairo through Springfield to Quincy and Chicago.  Other featured areas are Brooklyn/Freedom Village\, Miller Grove\, Rocky Fork\, Galesburg\, Mount Hope\, Jacksonville\, and New Philadelphia. \n Journey to Freedom:  Illinois’ Underground Railroad is proudly presented by The Abraham Lincoln National Heritage Area\, also known as Looking for Lincoln. \nThe Lincoln Log Cabin State Historic Site is located at 402 South Lincoln Highway Road\, Lerna\, IL  62440.  For more information call 217-345-1845\, or visit lincolnlogcabin.org
