DESCRIPTION:Print \nThe Effingham County Emergency Management Agency in collaboration with the National Weather Service in Lincoln\, will be holding a Special Storm Spotter Training Class on Saturday\, October 24th\, from 10 a.m. to Noon.  This will be at the Effingham County Emergency Operations Center\, 311 Miracle Avenue\, Effingham. \nParticipants will learn the characteristics of severe thunderstorms and other associated threats\, severe weather-relevant cloud formations\, and weather safety practices. \nParticipants will also learn how they can be a National Weather Service SKYWARN volunteer and help keep our community safe\, by providing timely and accurate reports of severe weather directly to the National Weather Service. \nIn addition to the usual storm spotter training\, the NWS is providing a winter storm outlook with safety information\, and the NWS will also explain ways they provide incident support to first responders in Effingham County. \nParticipants should note: \n\nTraining lasts about 2 hours.\nThe class is free and open to the public.\nThe class is appropriate for all ages.  Ages 10 and up will likely get the most out of the training.\nPre-registration is NOT required.\n\nFor questions about the training\, please call the Effingham County Emergency Management Agency\, 217-540-1669 \n

DESCRIPTION:Print  \n\nA Torchlight Halloween Hike\, Storytelling\, and Wiener Roast will take place at the Lincoln Log Cabin Grounds on Saturday\, October 24.  This free event will be from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m.\, and is a fun-for-all-ages stroll as paths between historic farms are lit by torchlight. \nMusic fills the air\, torches flicker\, and hearth fires glow as the paths between our historic farms come alive after dark!  Join us for a fun-for-all-ages stroll featuring music\, storytelling\, bonfires\, and a wiener roast near the Visitor Center.  The Lincoln Log Cabin Foundation will be selling cider\, hotdogs\, and s’mores to roast over the fire\, with proceeds benefiting Lincoln Log Cabin’s educational and interpretive programs. \nThe hike covers mixed terrain\, so wear sturdy footwear and dress for the season. \nA Note for Parents:  Some stories in the Lincoln Cabin are “spooky\,” but all are kid-friendly.  The torchlit paths may feel a little spooky for children who are afraid of the dark.  Along the way\, you’ll encounter actors in historic clothing and “friendly ghost” makeup.  They’ll be carrying lanterns and are not frightening—just part of the fun! \nThe Lincoln Log Cabin State Historic Site\, a gateway site for the Abraham Lincoln National Heritage Area\, was the 1840s home of Abraham Lincoln’s father and stepmother\, Thomas and Sarah Bush Lincoln.  It is located at 402 South Lincoln Highway Road near Lerna \nThis event is produced by Lincoln Log Cabin State Historic Site and the Lincoln Log Cabin Foundation.  For more information about this or other events at the site\, call 217-345-1845\, email info@lincolnlogcabin.org\, or visit www.lincolnlogcabin.org.
