DESCRIPTION:A complicated first lady\, enslaved people starting new lives\, women fighting for fair housing\, even actors performing on horseback – all those stories and more will be told Oct. 1 and 2 at the Conference on Illinois History\, presented by the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. \nThe highlight of the first day will be a presentation by Lois Romano\, author of the best-selling biography “An Inconvenient Widow: The Torment\, Trial\, and Triumph of Mary Todd Lincoln.”  She will discuss the challenges Mary Lincoln faced\, including profound personal losses\, struggles with mental health and unfair treatment by the law and the men in power around her.  Romano will also describe her intense research\, which included significant work at the presidential library. \nThe second day of the conference brings a unique double feature:  a presentation on bicycling in Illinois and a display of vibrant\, bicycle-themed art.  Cyclist and Illinois Wesleyan University professor Chris Sweet will discuss biking history\, its cultural impact and his own experiences on the road.  Meanwhile\, artist and musician Jeff Williams will showcase paintings that capture the spirit\, movement and beauty of cycling. \nThe price is $99 to attend both days of the conference\, or $59 for each day.  Student prices are $30 and $20.  Register at https://presidentlincoln.illinois.gov. \nThe conference also includes sessions designed specifically for teachers interested in learning new ways to explore history in the classroom.  Participating teachers can earn professional-development credit. \nPresented in conjunction with the Illinois State Historical Society\, the conference brings together university historians\, independent researchers\, government experts\, teachers and students to share the latest research into the history of Illinois. \nParticipants will hear the stories of: \n\nJapanese-Americans making a new start in Chicago after being detained by the U.S. government during World War II.\nAda S. SUMMARY:Golf Benefit for HSHS St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital Foundation
DESCRIPTION:The HSHS St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital Foundation is hosting its 17th annual Golf Benefit Friday\, Oct. 2 at the Effingham Country Club.  The HSHS St. Anthony’s Foundation expresses its thanks to its golf benefit sponsor Air Evac Lifeteam/GMR. \nRegistration begins at 10 a.m.\, with lunch being served from 10:30 to 11:40 a.m. as well as a putting contest.  After a brief welcome and presentation at 11:40 a.m.\, the noon tee-off begins the four-person scramble\, which consists of 32 teams of four players.  Golfers can participate in mulligans\, on-course contests and more activities.  A new feature this year will be six mobile mini golf holes placed throughout the course.  The event ends with a post-event reception featuring a meal and announcements of tournament and contest winners. \nAs a fundraising event\, costs of the golf benefit will be underwritten by sponsors who support the hospital and its health care initiatives.  Philanthropy Manager Michael Wall said\, “Donors play an integral role in enhancing the care HSHS St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital provides to our patients and community each year.  For example\, funds raised have supported the purchase of surgical and state-of-the-art medical equipment\, as well as funded patient transportation\,” he said.  “This year we are supporting the needs of future generations by raising funds for our Center for Pediatric Therapy\, which offers innovative treatments catered specifically to the unique needs of children in a child-friendly environment\, promoting development\, improving mobility and encouraging independence.  We invite anyone interested in supporting our community hospital to consider sponsoring or participating in our golf event.” \nThose not available or not interested in golfing who would still like to support the hospital can be “Community Support” sponsors and/or purchase raffle tickets for a number of prizes which will be raffled off.  You need not be present to win.  Raffle tickets are $5 each\, five tickets for $20 or 30 tickets for $100. \nArea residents and community advocates who would like to become a sponsor\, enter a team or purchase raffle tickets can find more information or register at stanthonyshospital.org/golf by Sept. 25.  For more information\, contact Michael Wall\, Philanthropy Manager\, at 217-347-1854 or email michael.wall@hshs.org.
