DESCRIPTION:In recognition of February being National Canned Food Month\, HSHS Home Care is teaming up with Dan Hecht Chevrolet Toyota and Roy Schmidt Honda in Effingham to “Cram the Car” with nonperishable food items\, hygiene products and monetary donations for Catholic Charities’ food pantry. \nDonations for the annual event will be accepted the entire month of February. On March 1\, HSHS Home Care staff will cram their cars with donated items before delivering them to Catholic Charities. The regional office serves Clark\, Crawford\, Cumberland\, Effingham\, Fayette\, Jasper and Shelby counties. \n“Cram the Car inspires me every year when I see how our neighbors\, friends and colleagues come together to care for the community\,” said Valerie Engelbart\, Volunteer/Bereavement Services Supervisor for HSHS Home Care. “It’s a privilege to deliver their generous donations. Let’s see how many cars we can fill!” \nSuggested items for donations include the following: \n\nBoxed meals (Hamburger Helper\, Rice-a-Roni)\nPancake mix and syrup\nJelly\nCanned fruit\nPasta sauce\nCereal\nGranola\nSugar-free canned fruit\nLow-salt canned vegetables\nLarge boxes of oatmeal\nSoap\nShampoo\nFeminine products\nRazors\n\nDonors are urged to check expiration dates. \nItems or monetary contributions may be dropped off at any of these locations: \n\nHSHS Home Care office – Located in St. Anthony’s Health Center at 900 W. SUMMARY:Springfield's Historic Sites Celebrate Black History Month
DESCRIPTION:Illinois state historic sites in Springfield present a variety of engaging hikes\, talks\, and tours to commemorate Black History Month in February. \nAll events are free\, open to the public\, and require no reservations. Programs are put on in partnership with the Illinois State Museum; the Illinois State Military Museum; and Fever River Research. Visitors can participate in these special events: \nWednesday\, February 26 – Illinois State Museum to explore Black Lives in Springfield \nThe Illinois State Museum’s Research and Collections Center will host “Black Lives in Springfield Part II: Military Service” at 6 p.m. The Research and Collections Center is at 1011 East Ash Street in Springfield. Experience the power of seldom-seen personal belongings from the 10th Street archeological dig and explore the lives of Black Springfield residents around the turn of the 20th century. This program will tell stories of courageous Black citizens who distinguished themselves through military service to their country. \nFriday\, February 28 – Explore history on a walking tour \nThe 1908 Race Riot Walking Tour begins at 2 p.m.\, at the Lincoln statues at Sixth and Adams streets. The walking tour will take visitors through downtown Springfield near the Old State Capitol to learn about the destruction that took place in 1908.  \nSaturday and Sunday\, March 1st and 2nd – Explore history on a hike \nBlack History Cemetery Hikes begin at the Lincoln Tomb State Historic Site at 2 p.m.\, in the historic Oak Ridge Cemetery. The hikes focus on Springfield’s Black community. Water and walking shoes are recommended. The tomb is at 1500 Monument Avenue.
