Pemberton\, who was influential in getting the appropriation approved for the building of the residence hall.  In addition to having a reputation for being “haunted\,” Pemberton Hall is the oldest women’s residence hall in the State of Illinois and a historical landmark. \nIt is located on the southeast corner of 4th Street and Lincoln Avenue in Charleston.

DESCRIPTION:PrintThe Illinois State Museum (ISM) will be featured in this month’s virtual Centennial Speaker Series session\, “Route 66 at 100 – An American Story\,” at 1 p.m. Tuesday\, Nov. 10.  The public is invited to join this free session celebrating the rich history and enduring legacy of the nation’s most iconic highway\, and registration is available online. \nThe session will introduce Research Route 66\, a collaboration of libraries\, museums and archives dedicated to researching and preserving historical records and making Route 66 stories and oral histories accessible for future generations.  Participants will discover the stories\, documents and artifacts these institutions are collecting and learn how they can contribute to\, access and appreciate these valuable collections. \nAmanda Bryden\, ISM registrar of history\, will discuss the museum’s online database of 100 oral histories about the Mother Road and its “Miles of Memories: Stories of Route 66” exhibition\, which is currently on display at the museum.  The database on the ISM website features videotaped interviews and searchable written transcripts. \nThe speaker series brings together notable authors\, historians and preservation advocates to share research and stories about Route 66.  Through presentations and discussions\, participants will gain a deeper understanding of the highway’s cultural and historical significance as it approaches its 100th anniversary. \nThe Centennial Speaker Series is organized and hosted by Research Route 66\, a collaboration led by the National Park Service Route 66 Corridor Preservation Program and the Route 66 Road Ahead Partnership\, along with archives\, libraries and museums located along the route\, including the Illinois State Museum. The program is certified as an official Route 66 centennial activity by the U.S. Route 66 Centennial Commission. \nResearch Route 66 works to preserve the historical record of Route 66 and make research materials accessible to the public and stakeholders for education\, preservation\, and management of the historic corridor.

DESCRIPTION:PrintEastern Illinois University and Charleston Middle School will join in honoring military veterans during a Veterans Day Program on Wednesday\, November 11\, at EIU’s Doudna Fine Arts Center.  This is free and open to the public\, offering community members an opportunity to recognize those who have served in the United States Armed Forces. \nThe program will begin promptly at 9 a.m. in Dvorak Concert Hall\, followed immediately by a reception at the same location.  Veterans attending will be recognized during the program\, with seating reserved for them on stage.  Each veteran attendee also will receive a commemorative challenge coin as a token of appreciation for their service. \nThe joint ceremony will bring together EIU and Charleston Middle School students\, University representatives\, veterans\, and community members in a shared observance of Veterans Day.  Charleston Middle School students will contribute to the program through a performance of the national anthem by their Choir\, a student-led Pledge of Allegiance\, and recognition of the student essay winner selected through the Veterans of Foreign Wars. \nEIU’s Reserve Officers’ Training Corps will present the colors and flags as part of the ceremony.  The program also will include the playing of Taps and a traditional three-volley salute\, honoring the service\, sacrifice\, and memory of those who have served the nation. \nBy bringing EIU and CMS students together for the annual observance\, the program offers an opportunity for younger generations to participate in a community tradition of remembrance and gratitude.  The ceremony recognizes veterans’ contributions while reinforcing the importance of honoring military service across generations. \nCommunity members\, families\, and veterans are encouraged to attend.  Parking will be available in the lot directly connected to the Doudna Fine Arts Center\, as well as in the two parking lots on the east side of the facility along Ninth Street.
