Friday's Results ----------------
NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament -------------------------------- Ryan Wittman and Louis Dale combined for 41 points and paced a menacing Cornell three-point attack as the Big Red earned the Ivy League's first NCAA Tournament victory in 12 years with a 78-65 first-round win over the Temple Owls. Dale posted 21 points, hitting 3-of-7 from three-point range, and Wittman scored 20 points after connecting on 4-of-6 from behind the arc. The 12th-seeded Big Red, this year's Ivy League champions, hit 39.1 percent of their three-pointers as a team and shot 56.3 percent from the floor overall in winning for the first time in six all-time NCAA Tournament games. Cornell (28-4) also become the first Ivy League school to claim victory in the tournament since Princeton's first-round defeat of UNLV in 1998. The fifth- seeded Owls, who were coming off their third straight A-10 championship, received 14 points each from Ryan Brooks and Juan Fernandez but saw their 10- game winning streak end. Temple (29-6) has not made it out of the tournament's first round since 2001.

National Basketball Association ------------------------------- LeBron James neared his season averages with 29 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists, as Cleveland dealt short-handed Chicago its 10th straight loss, 92-85. James, who in the first quarter became the youngest player in NBA history to reach 15,000 points for his career, netted 13 in the final seven minutes of a close game to lead the Cavaliers to their sixth straight win. Mo Williams added 18 points while Delonte West and Jawad Williams each chipped in 10 in the hard-fought victory. Taj Gibson recorded 20 points and 13 rebounds for the Bulls, whose current skid has them 2 1/2 games out of the final spot in the Eastern Conference playoff race.

National Hockey League ---------------------- Saku Koivu scored 14 seconds into overtime as the Anaheim Ducks rallied from a two-goal deficit to take a 5-4 win over the New York Islanders at Honda Center. In the extra session, Bruno Gervais tried to force a pass that Koivu picked off, skated into the New York zone and snapped a wrister into the left corner of the net. Lubomir Visnovsky scored twice, including the tying goal with 32 seconds left in regulation, while Jason Blake and Matt Beleskey each lit the lamp for the Ducks, who have won three straight but still sit seven points back of the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

Upsets were few and far between Friday as the first round of the NCAA Tournament came to a close. The lowest seed to advance on day two was No. 12 Cornell with its victory over Temple. It marked the first-ever win in the Big Dance for the Big Red.

Jon Leuer hit an open jumper with 17 seconds remaining, and fourth-seeded Wisconsin escaped with a 53-49 win over 13th-seeded Wofford. Wisconsin and Cornell will meet in the second round on Sunday in Jacksonville. There were two other games from the East Region on Friday, and those were in Buffalo. Kevin Jones scored 17 points and Devin Ebanks added 16 with 13 rebounds, as second-seeded West Virginia shrugged off a horrendous start and eventually rolled to a 77-50 victory over Morgan State. WVU will next play 10th-seeded Missouri, an 86-78 winner over seventh- seeded Clemson.

There were four games from the West Region. In Milwaukee, Jordan Crawford finished with 28 points, as sixth-seeded Xavier overcame a poor-shooting first half to beat Minnesota, 65-54. Xavier will next play third- seeded Pittsburgh, an 89-66 winner over Oakland. In Buffalo, eighth-seeded Gonzaga advanced with a 67-60 victory over Florida State. Top-seeded Syracuse took down Vermont, 79-56, in a rematch of a first-round NCAA game from five years ago. The Catamounts stunned the Orange in that 2005 first-round contest, but Syracuse came away with a dominating win Friday.

Duke, the top seed in the South, is through to the second round following a 73-44 rout of Arkansas-Pine Bluff. The Blue Devils will play Sunday in Jacksonville against California as the eighth-seeded Golden Bears beat Louisville, 77-62. In other South Region games in Spokane, fourth-seeded Purdue withstood a late Siena rally to hold on for a 72-64 victory. The Boilermakers will next play Texas A&M, which crushed Utah State, 69-53.

There were four games from the Midwest Region. Georgia Tech, the 10th seed, held off Oklahoma State, 64-59. The Yellow Jackets will play Sunday in Milwaukee against Big Ten champion Ohio State, as the second-seeded Buckeyes got a 68-51 victory over UC Santa Barbara. Fifth-seeded Michigan State survived a scare and beat New Mexico State, 70-67. The Spartans advanced to play Sunday in Spokane against fourth-seeded Maryland, an 89-77 winner over Houston.

The second round of the NCAA Tournament begins Saturday in the South Region as second seed Villanova battles No. 10 seed Saint Mary's in Providence. The Wildcats were behind most of the way against Robert Morris on Thursday but pushed the game to overtime before finally coming away with a 73-70 victory. The other game from the South Region will be in New Orleans, as third-seeded Baylor takes on 11th-seeded Old Dominion, a first-round victor over Notre Dame.

The West Region stars play in San Jose as No. 5 seed Butler aims for its 22nd straight victory. The Bulldogs take on upstart Murray State. The 13th-seeded Racers knocked off Vanderbilt with a buzzer-beating jumper on Thursday from Danero Thomas. The other game from the West comes from Oklahoma City as No. 2 seed Kansas State battles seventh-seeded BYU.

The women's NCAA Tournament begins on Saturday with a pair of top-seeded teams in action. The Tennessee Lady Vols are the No. 1 team in the Memphis Region and will host a game against Austin Peay. Stanford will be the other No. 1 seed to take the court Saturday as the Cardinal plays at home against UC Riverside.

St. John's has fired men's basketball coach Norm Roberts after six seasons at the helm. Roberts had a record of 81-101 at St. John's, taking over a program under NCAA probation in 2004-05, and this year's squad posted the most wins in his tenure with a mark of 17-16. The Red Storm upended Connecticut in the first round of the Big East Tournament, then dropped a two-point decision to Marquette in the second round before closing the season with a 73-71 loss to Memphis in the first round of the NIT.

The Vancouver Canucks have agreed to a six-year contract extension with forward Ryan Kesler, who is having a career year this season, his sixth in the league. Through 71 games, Kesler has posted 21 goals and career highs of 45 assists and 66 points. The Michigan native also helped the United States win the silver medal at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in February, scoring twice in six games. Kesler has spent his entire career with the Canucks since they selected him 23rd overall in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft. In 391 career games, he has posted 86 goals and 120 assists.

Men's quarterfinal action at the Indian Wells tennis event saw seventh-seeded American Andy Roddick down Tommy Robredo 6-3, 7-5 while sixth-seeded Robin Soderling downed fourth-seeded Andy Murray 6-1, 7-6 (7-4). Rafael Nadal and Ivan Ljubicic advanced to the semifinals with quarterfinal wins on Thursday. On the women's side, second-seeded Dane Caroline Wozniacki and former world No. 1 Jelena Jankovic advanced with a pair of semifinal wins to Sunday's final. The U.S. Open runner-up Wozniacki needed 1 hour, 38 minutes to dispose of fifth-seeded Pole Agnieszka Radwanska 6-2, 6-3 to reach her 13th WTA final. She's split her 12 finals appearances thus far and took a 2-1 lead in the head-to-head series with Radwanska. The sixth-seeded Jankovic handled eighth- seeded Aussie Samantha Stosur 6-2, 6-4 Friday at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

A knee injury has forced five-time Sony Ericsson Open champion Serena Williams to withdraw from the event, which is scheduled to start next week. Williams, a 12-time Grand Slam winner, hasn't played since completing her title run at the Australian Open earlier this year. She has been hampered with the left knee injury. Juan Martin del Potro also withdrew Friday, citing a wrist injury. Friday's announcement was the latest in a series of withdrawals for the Key Biscayne tournament. Maria Sharapova, Dinara Safina and Nikolay Davydenko all disclosed on Wednesday they wouldn't play because of injuries.

Three-time major champion Padraig Harrington posted a six-under 65 Friday to grab a one-stroke lead after two rounds of the Transitions Championship. Harrington completed two rounds at eight-under-par 134. Bubba Watson also carded a 65 Friday to move into a share of second place at minus-seven. He was joined there by defending champion Retief Goosen, former U.S. Open champ Jim Furyk and 2005 winner Carl Pettersson, who all shot 68 in round two.

Joey Logano became a first-time pole winner in the Sprint Cup Series after turning the fastest lap in Friday's qualifying for the Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway. Logano, the 2009 Sprint Cup rookie of the year, posted a lap of 124.630 m.p.h. on the half-mile, high-banked track to record his first pole in his 44th start. The 19-year-old is having a remarkable sophomore season so far in NASCAR's top circuit, as he currently sits 14th in points. Kurt Busch, who won two weeks ago at Atlanta, finished 0.096 seconds behind Logano to capture the outside pole. Busch is a five-time Bristol winner, with three of them coming in the spring event. Dave Blaney was the highest finisher among those drivers who were required to qualify on time with a third-place effort. Four-time defending series champion Jimmie Johnson took the fourth spot, while his Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jeff Gordon, also a five-time race winner at Bristol, picked up the fifth position. Juan Pablo Montoya, Matt Kenseth, Carl Edwards, Marcos Ambrose and David Reutimann completed the top-10. Sunday's 500-lap race at Bristol is scheduled to start around 1:00 p.m. (et).
