One of two men charged in a 2007 crime spree that involved the shooting death of Douglas County Sheriff’s Deputy Tommy Martin was sentenced Friday. Yusef Kareem Brown of Chicago was sentenced to consecutive 30-year prison terms on counts of home invasion and aggravated kidnapping. He pled guilty last September. The other defendant, William Thompson of Chicago, pled guilty to first-degree murder in 2009 and was sentenced to natural life in prison. Brown could be released from prison in 2047. The two men abducted a woman and put her in the trunk of a car near Camargo. Martin was shot while responding to a call about the abduction. Brown lost control of the car while trying to elude police in Arcola. He was taken into custody at the scene of the resulting crash, but Thompson ran into a nearby bank and held five people hostage for more than seven hours before being taken into custody. |
