St. A, Stew-Stras, Cisne Advance To Volleyball Title Matches

Effingham St. Anthony, Stewardson-Strasburg and Cisne advanced to the championship matches of sectional play with victories Tuesday evening.

Class 2A Newton Sectional

Effingham St. Anthony easily defeated Robinson 25-13, 25-12 to move into the championship match. The Bulldogs were led by Rachel Schultz in aces with 10, Haylee Mathis with eight kills and 14 assists, Megan Nuxoll with nine digs and Lauren Wendt, Maggie Mumm and Nuxoll with one block each.

In the opening match, Carlinville was a winner over Edwardsville Metro East Lutheran 25-12, the second score was not listed.

St. Anthony will now take on Carlinville at 7 p.m. Thursday for the sectional championship.

At Newton

St. Anthony -- Wortman, 3 digs; Mathis, 8 kills, 4 digs, 14 assists; Woltman, 2 digs, 9 assists; Wendt, 5 kills, 1 block; Braunecker, 2 kills, 3 digs; Mumm, 1 ace, 1 dig, 1 assist, 1 block; Nuxoll, 1 ace, 7 kills, 9 digs, 1 block; Schultz, 10 aces, 1 kill, 8 digs, 1 assist; Schmidt, 3 aces, 3 kills, 2 digs, 2 assists

 

Class 1A Arcola Sectional

Stewardson-Strasburg will play for the sectional championship after defeating Tri-County/Kansas in two games, 25-10, 26-24. The Comets were led by Baylee Quast and Kendall Knop with two aces each, Brittani Tabbert with 13 kills, Quast with 12 assists and nine digs. Knop also had nine digs.

"The girls came out really strong in game one," said Stew-Stras Coach Ronda Schlechte. "Everyone was on. We found our groove. This is probably our best game yet. We did struggle in game two with some serve receive and service errors but was still able to stay afloat. We are looking forward to continuing our season as long as possible."

In the second match, Arthur-Lovington won over Broadlands Heritage, 25-17, 25-22.

Stew-Stras and Broadlands Heritage square off for the championship Thursday at 7 p.m.

At Arcola

Class 1A Lebanon Sectional

Cisne ended South Central's season by winning in two games, 25-14, 25-16. Coach Jonathon Smith, an Altamont High School graduate, is Cisne's coach. The Runnin' Lions won their first ever regional this season and now will be playing for the sectional championship Thursday.

In the opener, Lebanon won over Woodlawn 19-25, 25-12, 25-23.

Lebanon and Cisne square off at 7 p.m. Thursday for the title.
