Sigel St. Michael, Stewardson-Strasburg and Teutopolis captured eighth-grade regional volleyball championships Thursday.

 

Class 1A Sigel St. Michael Regional

Sigel St. Michael was a winner in its own regional Thursday.

The Sharpshooters won 25-8, 25-20 over Grayville.

St. Michael now advances to its own sectional Monday and will take on Martinsville at 6:30 p.m. Martinsville won its own regional Tuesday by beating Neoga, 25-13, 15-25, 25-16.

 

Class 8-2A St. Elmo/Brownstown Regional

Stewardson-Strasburg handed Assumption Central A&M the loss in the championship match of the St. Elmo/Brownstown Regional.

Central A&M was a winner in the opening set, 25-21. But Stew-Stras came back strong with 25-18 and 25-21 scores for the victory.

Kendra Hayes led the way for the winners with eight aces, 12 digs and five kills. Claire VonBehrens led in assists with six. Karly Wetherell and Edie Wittenberg had one block each.

The Comets are now 17-3 on the season and will head to sectional action at Paris Crestwood Monday and will meet host Paris Crestwood at 6:30 p.m. Paris Crestwood defeated Hutsonville, 25-17, 25-13 to win the Hutsonville Regional.

Class 8-2A St. Elmo Regional

Stewardson-Strasburg -- Hayes, 8 aces, 12 digs, 2 assists, 5 kills; VonBehrens, 3 aces, 4 digs, 6 assists, 2 kills; Schumacher, 4 digs, 1 kill; Kull, 4 aces, 2 digs, 2 kills; Wetherell, 2 aces, 2 digs, 3 kills, 1 block; Wittenberg, 6 digs, 3 kills, 1 block

 

Class 8-3A Casey-Westfield Regional

Teutopolis defeated Casey-Westfield to win the regional championship Thursday.

The Wooden Shoes won the opener 25-13 but Casey-Westfield fought back to take the second set 28-26. T-town then won the match 25-14.

"We came out fast in the first set and I think we shocked ourselves with it and that led to the second set where we spotted them a 4-0 lead," said Coach Jim Dietz. "We caught them at 14-14, but we did some silly stuff towards the end of the set. What I loved was that there was no pouting. We came out, scored the first point on serve-receive and then opened a 9-0 lead, showing we hadn't let mistakes get us down. i think that was a show of great mental toughness and character -- whole team because the bench was in it and talking, too."

Elise Pals led T-town with 16 kills and three blocks. Marie Zumbahlen had 27 digs. Brittany Swingler led in assists with 21. Clara Mette had five aces.

The Wooden Shoes will now meet Arthur in the Paris Mayo Sectional Monday at 6:30 p.m. Arthur won the Sullivan Regional with a 25-21, 26-24 win over Shelbyville Moulton.

Class 8-3A Casey-Westfield Regional

Teutopolis -- Zumbahlen, 2 kills, 27 digs; Tegeler, 4 kills, 25 digs, 1 assist; Pals, 3 blocks, 16 kills, 24 digs; Swingler, 1 kill, 1 ace, 10 digs, 21 assists; Probst, 1 kill, 3 digs, 3 assists; Hemmen, 2 aces, 3 digs, 2 assists; Mette, 1 kill, 5 aces, 12 digs; Wernsing, 3 kills, 3 digs; Tarter, 3 kills, 5 digs

 

Class 4A Mount Zion Regional

Rochester won the championship of the Mount Zion Regional Thursday.

Rochester claimed a 26-24 win before Taylorville came back with a 25-20 victory. Rochester then won the match, 27-25.
