Eighth-Grade Volleyball Regionals -- March 7

Several area teams advanced in the eighth-grade volleyball regionals Tuesday.

  

Class 2A St. Elmo/Brownstown Regional

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City and South Central advanced after opening round play in this regional.

CHBC downed host St. Elmo/Brownstown, 25-15, 25-21 in the opening match.

The second contest went to Assumption Central A&M over Ramsey, 25-20, 25-12.

South Central then claimed the third contest, 25-15, 25-18.

CHBC will now meet Stewardson-Strasburg at 5:30 p.m. today while South Central takes on Assumption Central A&M at 6:30.

The winners advance to the champoinship match Thursday at 6 p.m.

 

Class 1A Martinsville Regional

Martinsville captured the championship of its own regional Tuesday.

Martinsville downed Neoga in three sets. Martinsville won the opener, 25-13. Neoga came back with a 25-15 second set. Martinsville then won the match 25-16.

The winner advances to the Sigel St. Michael Sectional Monday and will face the winner of the St. Michael Regional at 6:30 p.m.

 

Class 8-1A Sigel St. Michael Regional

Sigel St. Michael and Grayville advanced to the championship match in this regional.

St. Michael downed Newton St. Thomas, 25-18, 25-16.

In the second match, Grayville won over West Salem, 25-19, 18-25, 25-16.

The Sharpshooters and Grayville will meet for the regional championship Thursday at 6 p.m.

 

Class 8-2A Hutsonville Regional

All three local teams were defeated in this regional Tuesday.

Oblong downed Effingham St. Anthony, 25-16, 25-15 in the opener.

Edwards County (Albion) won the second match over Dieterich, 25-9, 25-18.

In the final match, Hutsonville beat North Clay (Louisville), 28-26, 25-20.

Oblong advances to face top-seeded Paris Crestwood at 5 p.m. today while Edwards County and Hutsonvlle will meet at 6:30 p.m.

The winners advance to the championship match Thursday at 5 p.m.

 

Class 8-3A Casey-Westfield Regional

Teutopolis advanced but Jasper County fell in the Casey-Westfield Regional Tuesday.

The Wooden Shoes defeated Cumberland, 25-17, 25-20.

Marie Zumbahlen led the Shoes in digs with 24. Gabby Tegeler, Elise Pals, Brittney Swingler and Ella Tarter had four kills each. Swingler led in assists with eight. Clara Mette and Abbie Lee had four aces each.

The Shoes are now 17-7 on the season.

In the second match, Casey-Westfield won over Jasper County but not without a fight.

Jasper County took the opener 25-23 but Casey-Westfield came back with a 25-22 count. The homestanders then won the match, 25-22.

Jasper County ends the season with a 15-6 record.

Warfel led in aces with six for Jasper County while Shull had 12 assists and also led in digs with five. Warfel and Probst had one block each.

Teutopolis and Casey-Westfield will square off for the regional championship Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

Class 3A Casey-Westfield Regional

Teutopolis -- Zumbahlen, 24 digs, 1 assist; Tegeler, 4 kills, 18 digs, 1 assist; Pals, 4 kills, 3 aces, 15 digs; Swingler, 4 kills, 4 digs, 8 assists; Probst, 2 digs, 5 assists; Mette, 4 aces,  digs; Tarter, 4 kills, 3 digs; Wernsing, 1 kill, 3 digs; Hemmen, 1 kill, 3 aces, 1 assist; Lee, 4 aces; Mette, 1 dig; Hartke, 2 digs

Jasper County -- Warfel, 6 aces, 2 kills, 1 assist, 1 block, 1 dig; Shull, 5 aces, 12 assists, 5 digs; Ochs, 2 aces, 6 kills, 1 assist, 3 digs; Probst, 6 kills, 1 assist, 1 block, 3 digs; Michl, 5 kills; Fehrenbacher, 1 kill, 1 dig; Davis, 2 digs

 

Class 8-4A Mount Zion Regional

Effingham's season came to a close in the Mount Zion Regional Tuesday.

The Mustangs fell to Rochester, 25-12, 25-14.

In the opener, Taylorville won over Clinton, 25-6, 22-25, 25-20.

Taylorville and Rochester meet Thursday for the regional title at 6 p.m.
