St. Anthony, Windsor/Stew-Stras Advance In VB Sectionals

Effingham St. Anthony and Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg opened sectional volleyball action with victories while South Central and Newton fell in opening round play Monday evening.

The Bulldogs and South Central competed in the Class 1A Webber Township (Bluford) Sectional.

St. Anthony opened with a 28-26, 25-23 win over Edwards County (Albion).

Leading the way in kills were Andrea Rudolphi and Abbi Hatton wih six each. Aces were split, one each, between Anna Faber, Addie Wernsing, Rudolphi, Hatton and Maddie Kibler. Anna Niemeyer led in blocks with two. Wernsing had 10 assists.

The Bulldogs are now 30-7 on the season and will square off against Norris City-Omaha-Enfield Wednesday at 6 p.m. for the sectional championship. The winner moves on to the Centralia Christ Our Rock Lutheran Super-Sectional Friday at 6:30 p.m.

In the second match, Norris City-Omaha-Enfield defeated South Central. The Cougars won the opener 25-21 before NCOE came back with 25-19, 25-16 sets for the match.

Sierra Arnold had 13 digs while Olivia Brauer led in assists with 12. Brooklyn Garrett had 12 digs. Brooke Cowger had nine kills and one block and Emma Jenne had nine kills.

South Central ends the season with a 29-8 record.

Class 1A Champaign St. Thomas More Sectional

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg and Champaign St. Thomas More were winners in the St. Thomas More Sectional Monday evening.

WSS won the opener over Leroy, 25-23, 25-19.

Ella Kinkelaar led the way in assists with 27 for the Hatchets. Gabby Vonderheide had 12 kills. Halle Moomaw, Kinley Quast and Ainslie Eident had two aces each. Kaylynn Carey led in solo blocks with two. Quast led in digs with 12.

"I'm so glad they came to play tonight," said WSS Coach Ronda Schlechte. "It was a battle til the end. The girls played real hard and fought for this win. Having Gabby back fulltime makes such a difference. She did a great job working around their blocks."

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg improved to 29-8 on the season.

St. Thomas More defeated Decatur Lutheran Co-op, 25-22, 25-22.

Windsor/Stew-Stras will now meet Champaign St. Thomas More at 6 p.m. Wednesday for the sectional championship and a berth in the Macon Meridian Super-Sectional Friday.

Class 2A Breese Mater Dei Sectional

Newton saw its' season come to a close in the Breese Mater Dei Sectional Monday evening.

The opening match of the evening saw Breese Mater Dei down Shelbyville, 25-21, 25-8.

Breese Central then won over Newton in the second contest, 25-18, 25-22.

The Eagles were led by Schafer with 13 assists, Bennett with seven digs, Shull with five kills and Kessler with a block.

Newton ended the season with a 29-9 record.
