SEB Wins Twice In EIC Tourney, Area Volleyball Roundup

ST. ELMO -- St. Elmo/Brownstown picked up two wins in the Egyptian Illini Conference Volleyball Tournament Tuesday evening.

SEB downed Martinsville, 25-16, 25-18 in the opening match. Peyton Garrard led the way with three aces, 10 digs and three blocked shots while Laney Baldrige had 11 kills and 11 points. Morgan Hall added three blocked shots.

In the second match, Mulberry Grove defeated Martinsville. The first set was a marathon as the Aces pulled out a 34-32 win. Mulberry Grove then won the match, 25-19.

The final contest of the evening saw SEB win over Mulberry Grove, 25-18, 25-12.

Hall tallied seven kills, five digs and eight points for the winners. Shelby Sasse had six aces and six points. Baldrige had two blocks.

St. Elmo/Brownstown and Patoka will play for the championship at 8 p.m. Thursday while Ramsey and Mulberry Grove will meet for third place at 7 p.m. and CHBC and Martinsville start the evening at 6 p.m. for fifth place.

At Olney

South Central defeated Richland County Tuesday evening in two sets, 25-13, 25-21.

Sidney Shumate led the Cougars in assists with 11 and aces with four. Sierra Arnold had 13 digs and Emma Jenne seven kills.

Richland County claimed the junior varsity match, 21-25, 25-23, 15-8. The Cougars won the freshman/sophomore contest, 25-19, 25-23.

South Central's varsity now sports a 25-7 record while the JV is 8-6 and the frosh/soph 4-4-5.

At Strasburg

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg improved to 24-8 on the season with a win over Tuscola during Senior Night festivities Tuesday evening.

The Hatchets won in two sets, 25-16, 25-14.

Leading the way were Kinley Quast with four aces and five digs, Halle Moomaw with eight kills, Ella Kinkelaar with 14 assists and five digs and Mary Vonderheide with five digs.

"Tonight we celebrated our seniors at Windsor as well as the eight seniors from Tuscola," said WSS Coach Ronda Schlechte. "Both teams are dealing with injuries which is unfortunate with post-season starting next week."

Windsor/Stew-Stras improved to 15-5 in junior varsity play with a 25-20, 25-13 win over Tuscola. WSS also claimed the freshman/sophomore match, 25-11, 25-12 and is now 12-7-5 on the season.

The Hatchets are back in action Friday at Champaign Central.

Effingham High School fell to Mattoon on the Green Wave home court Tuesday evening.

Mattoon was a winner, 25-10, 25-21.

Leading the Hearts were Sidney Donaldson with four kills, Hannah Thompson with six assists and one ace, Berkley Pullen and Bria Beals with one ace each and Saige Althoff with six digs.

In junior varsity play, Effingham claimed the victory, 25-16, 25-19 and also won the freshman/sophomore contest, 21-16, 9-21, 15-12.

EHS is back in action Tuesday in the Herrin Regional at 7 p.m. vs. the host squad.

At Robinson

Teutopolis won the freshman/sophomore and junior vasrity contests but Robinson came up the winner in the varsity match Tuesday evening.

The Maroons won over T-town in two sets, 25-22, 25-16. T-town dropped to 14-20 on the season.

"Our streak of consistent matches ended tonight," said T-town Jim Dietz. "Our serve-receive was again excellent and we did a good job hustling on defense, but we were passive with our offense, putting everything into the middle of the court, soft stuff, and a good team like Robinson eats that up, especially with the quality of their senior libero.

"After a five point Emma Deters serving run tied the contest at 14 in the second set, we gave Robinson five straight freeball opportunities and the Maroons capitalized on all five to take a lead they did not relinquish again."

Emily Konkel led the way for the Shoes with six kills and two blocks while Sara Zumbahlen had seven assists, Claresa Ruholl 10 digs and Emma Deters three aces.

The Wooden Shoes junior varsity won 27-25, 25-12 while the freshmen/sophomores split with Robinson, winning 25-23 and falling 25-19.

T-town will play host to Centralia Thursday with the junior varsity match starting at six p.m.

North Clay (Louisville) defeated Cisne in Tuesday evening action.

The Cardinals won 25-22, 25-18 to improve to 24-10 on the season.

Cisne won the junior varsity match, 25-20, 25-19 but North Clay captured the freshman/sophomore match, 25-13, 25-21.

North Clay will be back in action Thursday at Clay City for its Pink Out match.

Lawrenceville came calling and picked up a victory over Clay City.

The Indians were winners, 25-19, 26-24.

Leading Clay City were Taylor Pittman with five kills and three blocked shots and Keidra Kuenstler with one ace and 31 digs.
