EIC Tourney Opened, St. A, T-town, Newton Win In Volleyball

ST. ELMO -- The Egyptian Illini Conference Volleyball Tournament opened play Monday evening at St. Elmo High School.

Patoka won the opener over Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City, 25-23, 12-25, 25-21.

Ramsey then defeated CHBC, 25-23, 12-25, 26-24.

Patoka finished out with a victory over Ramsey, 25-18, 25-14.

Tonight's games in pool play feature St. Elmo/Brownstown against Martinsville at 6 p.m., Martinsville taking on Mulberry Grove at 7 and SEB meeting Mulberry Grove at 8.

The finals are set for Thursday after tonight's competition.

 

At St. Anthony

St. Anthony went three sets and pulled out a victory over visiting Richland County Monday evening at the Enlow Center.

The Bulldogs won the opener, 25-21. Richland County came back with a 25-23 win. The Bulldogs then took the match 25-21.

Abbi Hatton and Lucy Fearday led the way in kills with 11 each. Anna Faber and Andrea Rudolphi had one ace each. Fearday led in blocks with three. Faber led in assists with 18.

St. Anthony also nabbed the junior varsity match, 25-21, 25-9 and took the freshman/sophomore contest, 25-20, 25-23.

At Teutopolis

it was a barn-burner as Teutopolis played host to Cumberland during Senior Night festivities Monday evening.

The Wooden Shoes celebrated its seniors with a hard-fought win over the Pirates.

Cumberland claimed the opening set, 25-20. T-town came back with a 25-21 win and then finished strong with a 25-23 final set for the match.

"We were able to put together all aspects of our game this evening once we got over the emotional surge of Senior Night," said T-town Coach Jim Dietz. "We scrambled, we made good choices and we were able to keep Cumberland from getting the ball to No. 11 as often as they wanted.

"I was proud for the seniors. When you are a new coach, it's hard without seniors buying in and these guys have come every day ready for work and that's held to the same attitude carrying down to the freshman/sophomore and junior varsity.

"In the third set after we built a 5-6 point lead, Cumberland tried to come back but Summer Wall picked up four of her nine digs in the last half of the set to deny Cumberland's best hitter scoring any kills."

The Shoes were led by Claresa Ruholl with 26 digs, breaking Katelyn Jansen's' 2019 record of 25 for a match.

Sara Swingler had three aces and 14 assists. Sara Niemerg and Taylor Bueker were led in blocks with two each. Emily Konkel had six kills.

T-town also captured the junior varsity match, 25-15, 23-25, 25-23 to improve to 15-10. The Shoes freshman/sophomore squad won 25-8, 25-13 and is 13-7-4.

The Wooden Shoes return to action today at Robinson with a 14-19 record.

At Newton

Newton improved its record to 26-8 on the season with a win over Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg Monday evening.

The Eagles won in two sets, 25-17, 25-21. Schafer led Newton in assists with 23 and digs with six. Shull had seven blocks. Zumbahlen and Rauch led the way in kills with nine each and Rauch and Zumbahlen had two aces each.

Windsor/Stew-Stras was led by Halle Moomaw with seven kills, Ella Kinkelaar with 11 assists, Kinley Quast with 11 digs and one ace. The Hatchets drop to 23-8 on the season.

"We were dealing with some injuries tonight and we just didn't click," said WSS Coach Ronda Schlechte. "Newton always has great competition for us so it was a little disappointing we couldn't make it work better."

The Hatchets will be celebrating Senior Night tonight against Tuscola.

Newton also claimed he junior varsity match, 25-17, 25-12 and won the freshman/sophomore match, 25-19, 25-17.

Newton will celebrate Senior Night Thursday against Paris.

Paris played host to Neoga and picked up the varsity victory Monday evening.

The Tigers won in two sets, 25-21, 25-22.

Neoga was led by Haylee Campbell with six kills, Natalie O'Dell, Brynn Richards and Allison Worman with two blocks each, O'Dell with eight assists, Sydney Hakman with 12 digs and O'Dell and Allison Worman with two aces each.

At Paris

Centralia Christ Our Rock Lutheran played host to North Clay (Louisville) and sent the Cardinals home with a loss Monday.

CORL won in two sets, 25-22, 25-17. North Clay dropped to 23-10 on the season.

CORL also captured the junior varsity match, 23-25, 25-20, 15-13. North Clay was a winner in the freshman/sophomore contest, 25-14, 25-13.

The Cardinals will celebrate Senior Night today against Cisne.
