Mahomet-Seymour captured an Apollo Conference volleyball win over Effingham in Thursday play.

The Hearts fell in two sets, 25-10, 25-21. Leading EHS were Bria Beals and Sidney Donaldson in kills with three each, Abby Cunningham, Ali Davis and Hannah Thompson in assists with two each, Cunningham, Angela Ballman and Kaitlyn Budde with one ace each and Beals with five digs

In junior varsity play, Mahomet-Seymour was a 25-20, 25-20 winner and also won the freshman/sophomore match, 19-21, 21-9, 15-12.

EHS is back in action Tuesday at Mattoon.

At Olney

Newton pushed its record to 21-7 on the season with a victory over Richland County Thursday.

The Eagles won 25-16, 25-11. Leading the way were Rauch and Martin with two aces each. Smithenry in kills with four, Mahaffey with 10 assists and five digs, Hemrich with five digs and Kessler with four blocked shots.

Newton also claimed the junior varsity contest, 25-15, 25-14 and the freshman match, 25-13, 25-12.

The Eagles are back in action Saturday at the Edwards County Tournament. They will face Norris City/Omaha/Enfield at 10 a.m. and Richland County at 11 a.m.

At St. Anthony

The National Trail Conference Tournament opened play with three matches Thursday at the Enlow Center.

In the opener, Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg downed Altamont, 25-9, 25-22.

Windsor/Stew-Stras was led by Ella Kinkelaar with 23 assists, Gabby Vonderheide and Kinley Quast with seven digs each, Halle Moomaw with 10 kills and Mary Vonderheide with two aces.

Altamont was led by Lanie Tedrick with three kills, Peyton Osteen in assists with six and aces with one, Brianna Grunloh with eight digs and Alyvia Wills with one blocked shot.

In the second match, Altamont downed St. Elmo/Brownstown in three sets. Altamont won the opener 25-17 but SEB came back with a 25-21 second set. Altamont then claimed the match, 25-17.

Tedrick and Wills led the way in kills with seven each. P. Osteen had 13 assists and 16 digs. Mad. Splechter led in aces with two and Tedrick had six blocks.

The final match was Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg against St. Elmo/Brownstown and the Hatchets won 25-19, 25-14.

The Hatchets were led by Kinkelaar with three aces and 18 assists, Vonderheide with nine kills and nine digs and Ainslie Eident and Maddie Rincker with three aces each.

The tournament continues today with St. Anthony against Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City at 5 p.m. followed by Neoga taking on CHBC at 6 and St. Anthony facing Neoga at 7 at the Enlow Center. At Goff Gym, South Central takes on Dieterich at 5, North Clay (Louisville) meets Dieterich at 6 and South Central squares off against North Clay at 7.

The tournament comes to a close with finals Saturday beginning at 9 a.m.

MTC Tournament

The Midland Trail Conference Tournament got underway at Wayne City, Webber Township (Bluford) and Woodlawn Thursday.

Wayne City defeated Red Hill (Bridgeport), 27-25, 25-9; Centralia Christ Our Rock Lutheran won over Red Hill, 25-19, 25-11 and CORL defeated Wayne City, 25-16, 25-10.

Webber Township defeated Sandoval, 25-15, 25-18 while Grayville won over Sandoval, 25-14, 25-7 and Webber Township, 25-23, 25-16.

Woodlawn downed Cisne, 25-13, 25-13 and Clay City, 25-23, 25-9 and Clay City was a winner over Cisne, 25-20, 19-25, 15-9.

Today's schedule includes, in the fourth place pool at the junior high gym -- Webber vs. Wayne City, 5 p.m.; Webber vs. Clay City, 6 p.m. and Clay City vs. Wayne City, 7 p.m.

The championship pool in the high school gym -- Woodlawn vs. CORL, 5 p.m.; CORL vs. Grayville, 6 p.m. and Woodlawn vs. Grayville, 7 p.m.
