S. Central, SEB, T-town Advance In Volleyball Regionals

South Central and St. Elmo/Brownstown picked up victories in the Class 1A Effingham St. Anthony Volleyball Regional Monday.

The Cougars handed Mulberry Grove a loss in the opener, 25-10, 25-11.

SEB tallied a 25-17, 25-12 win over Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City in the second match.

SEB's Laney Baldrige and Morgan Hall led the way in kills for the winners with five each. Peyton Garrard had eight assists. Lydia Smith led in aces with four. Hall had seven digs. Baldrige and Lillian Nolen had a blocked shot each. Baldridge led in points with eight.

CHBC was led by Kyleigh Wallace with three kills and two aces, Madison Wojcik and Marissa Summers with two assists each. Wojcik had one block as did Karlee Smith. Tatyana Duckwitz had eight digs.

Tuesday's matches will have St. Anthony against Dieterich at 5:30 p.m. followed by Altamont taking on Neoga at 6:30.

South Central will square off against St. Elmo/Brownstown Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.

Class 1A St. Anthony Regional

Class 1A Clay City Regional

One match was held at the Clay City Regional Monday evening.

Hutsonville/Palestine downed Patoka Co-op, 25-15, 25-23 and will now face Cumberland at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

In tonight's matches, Clay City takes on Red Hill (Bridgeport) at 5:30 while North Clay (Lousiville) meets Oblong at 6:30.

 

Class 1A Moweaqua Central A&M Regional

Moweaqua Central A&M tallied a victory in the only match scheduled Monday evening.

Central A&M downed Tuscola, 25-23, 30-28. The winners now meet Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg in a Wednesday match at 5:30 p.m.

Tonight's matches have Macon Meridian against Arcola at 5:30 followed by Bethany Okaw Valley facing Cerro Gordo/Bement at 6:30.

 

Class 2A Newton Regional

Teutopolis and Robinson came out winners in opening round play of the Robinson Regional Monday.

T-town, seeded ninth, upset sixth-seeded Marshall. Marshall claimed the opener 25-22 but the Wooden Shoes scrambled back to take the next set 25-21 and then won the match 25-23.

"I've been coaching a long time and over the years I've seen quite a few Marshall volleyball teams and this was by far the best I've seen," said T-town Coach Tim Mills. "They played hard all night and made some amazing defensive plays. Their setter was everywhere. She ran down passes and delivered really accurate sets. In the end we took advantage of their serve receive.

"Sara Swingler went back to serve with us down 23-21 and she hit an ace and then her last three serves took them out of system each time. We got soft contact on the first two and we were able to get kills to put us up 24-23. They couldn't handle her last serve either and it led to the hitting error that ended the match.

"We've had a disappointing season to say the least. After starting 10-7, we struggled through a 10-match losing streak. Tonight was indication for the girls. They played so well and I'm really proud of the way they fought."

The Wooden Shoes were led by Emily Konkel with 17 digs, Tia Probst with three blocks and 12 assists, Kaityn Schumacher had three blocks. Sara Swingler led in aces with two and points with 13. Molly Pals had two aces.

In the second match, Robinson downed Lawrenceville, 25-22, 25-17.

T-town takes on No. 2 Breese Central tonight at 5:30 followed by No. 3 Newton against Robinson at 6:30. The winners advance to the championship match Thursday.

Newton Regional

Class 3A Effingham Regional

One match was contested at the Effingham Regional Monday evening.

No. 7 Olney tallied a win over No. 8 Charleston in three sets. Charleston won the opener 25-17 but Olney rallied with 25-15, 25-23 sets for the match.

Olney advances to face No. 2 Marion tonight at 5:30 followed by No. 6 Effingham taking on No. 3 Mattoon at 6:30.

The winners advance to the championship match Thursday.
