Windsor/Stew-Stras Advances To Gold Flight In NTC Volleyball Tourney

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg picked up two wins in the National Trail Conference Volleyball Tournament at St. Anthony's Enlow Center Thursday.

The Hatchets won their opener over St. Elmo/Brownstown, 25-9, 25-8.

Kinley Quast led the winners in aces with four and digs with 10 while Gabby Vonderheide had eight kills, Ella Kinkelaar 14 assists, Bella Braden a solo block and Halle Moomaw and Kaylynn Carey two block assists.

In the second contest, Neoga pulled out a 25-22, 23-25, 25-23 victory over St. Elmo/Brownstown.

Leading SEB were Laney Baldrige and Morgan Hall with five kills each, Shelby Sasse with three aces and five points and Hall with 18 digs.

In the final match of the evening, Windsor/Stew-Stras defeated Neoga, 25-11, 25-14.

The Hatchets were led by Kinkelaar with four aces, one solo block, one block assist and 13 assists, Natalie Hayes with six kills, Vonderheide with five digs and one solo block and Moomaw with two block assists.

Windsor-Stew-Stras advances to the Gold Flight with a 22-4 record and will play at 5 p.m.

Neoga will play in the Silver Flight at 2 p.m. while St. Elmo/Brownstown is in the Bronze Flight at 9 a.m.

The tournament continues tonight as St. Anthony, Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City and North Clay (Louisville) will compete at the Enlow Center while Altamont, Dieterich and South Central will be playing at Goff Gym.

At Mahomet

Effingham traveled to Mahomet-Seymour and dropped Apollo Conference matches in varsity and junior varsity action Thursday.

The Hearts fell in the varsity contest, 25-8, 25-20. Lexi Chrappa led in kills with six, one block and had four digs while Tori Budde had six assists and Bria Beals and Megan Ballman had four digs each.

In the junior varsity match, Mahomet-Seymour won the opener 25-22 before the Hearts took the second set, 25-16. M-S then captured the match, 15-9.

In freshman/sophomore play, Mahomet-Seymour was a winner, 21-19, 21-9.

At Newton

Newton claimed the regular season championship of the Little Illini Conference Thursday.

The Eagles defeated Olney, 25-12, 25-17 and took the conference title. Newton is 22-6 overall.

Schafer, Weidner and Ochs had two aces each for the Eagles. Johnston led in kills with 10. Schafer had 27 assists, Ochs led in blocks with two. Bennett tallied seven digs.

Newton returns to action Saturday in the Edwards County Invitational, meeting Grayville at 9 a.m. and Casey-Westfield at 11.

In junior varsity play, Newton was a 25-13, 25-15 winner and also claimed the freshman/sophomore match, 25-13, 25-14.

Cumberland handed Blue Ridge a loss in volleyball action Thursday.

The Pirates won in two sets, 25-14, 25-23 and improved to 24-6 on the season.

Leading the way was Ivy Ayers with 10 digs, Carly Thornton with 14 assists, Zoe Mitchell with six kills and Mackenzie Taylor with two blocks.
