Stewardson Trinity Takes Second at Tourney

Stewardson Trinity competed in the Jasper-Geff Volleyball Tournament Friday and finished second.

The squad downed Cisne 25-12, 25-5 in Thursday action and won over Clay City 25-23, 25-12 in the second match. That advanced the squad to the title contest Friday where they fell to Fairfield, 26-24, 25-21.

"Unfortunately two of our eighth-grade starters were sick and unable to compete, Ella Kinkelaar and Halle Moomaw," said Trinity Coach Tammy Manhart. "We lost the championship match. The younger players that filled in did a great job but we just couldn't pull it out. We lost in two close sets. These were the first two sets we have dropped all year.

"If our season is over, we can't let this loss take away from what these girls have accomplished this year. This group of eighth-graders have been working so hard for years and their accomplishments demonstrate that. We finished 17-0 in the fall Lutheran season and won the LSA state championship.

"We are 25-1 this spring, winning the Newton St. Thomas Tourney, St. Anthony Tourney, Effingham Eighth-Grade Sideout Shootout and took second in this tournament."

Clay City defeated Jasper-Geff in two sets to claimed third place. Clay City was a winner, 26-24, 25-15.

Clay City finished the season with a 17-2 record, undefeated in WEAA Conference play and conference tournament championships.

The SIJHSAA has canceled the state tournament series for the year.
