Olney Beats St. A, Area Volleyball Roundup

OLNEY -- Effingham St. Anthony traveled to Olney for high school volleyball competition Monday and fell to the Tigers in two sets, 25-19, 25-16.

The Bulldogs were led by Ada Rozene with nine kills, Kyra Swearingen with 15 assists and Taylor Ritz with six points.

Olney also nabbed the junior varsity match, 25-11, 25-13. St. Anthony won the freshman contest, 25-11, 25-21.

At Strasburg

Newton came calling and picked up a victory over Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg Monday. The Eagles won in two, 25-10, 25-22. WSS dropped to 17-12 on the season.

"Tonight we celebrated our five seniors for Senior Night," said WSS Coach Ronda Schlechte. "Mackinzee Reynolds, Claire Moomaw, Mackenzia Brown, Rachel Kessler and Sydney Tabor. The girls battled hard in the second set with some really nice volleys but we fell a few points shy."

WSS was led by Anna Schlechte with two aces, Mackinzee Reynolds with seven kills and eight digs and Hannah Hayes with six assists

Newton was led by Jansen and Hemrich with two aces each, Probst with 15 kills, Hemrich with 24 assists, Johnson with two blocks and Geltz with 10 digs. The Eagles are now 26-8 on the season.

Newton also nabbed the junior varsity match, 25-16, 25-19. The Hatchets and Newton split freshman/sophomore matches. WSS won the first contest, 25-20 while Newton took the second set, 25-17.

At St. Elmo

The Egyptian-Illini Conference Tournament got underway Monday.

Ramsey handed Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City a loss, 25-19, 25-15. CHBC then defeated Mulberry Grove, 25-15, 25-6. Ramsey downed Mulberry Grove, 25-12, 25-17.

The tourney continues today with St. Elmo/Brownstown against Ramsey at 5, Patoka taking on Ramsey at 6, SEB against Mulberrry Grove at 7 and Patoka facing Mublerry  Grove at 8.

Martinsville captured a win over Dieterich in action Monday.

Martinsville won 26-24, 25-23. Dieterich was led by Kaitlyn Boerngen with eight digs, Gabi Hardiek with nine kills, Emily Bloemer with six assists, Molly Niemerg with eight digs and Iva Lilly with three blocks.

The Bluestreaks won the junior varsity match, 25-17, 26-24.

At Toledo

Cumberland played host to Teutopolis and claimed a varsity victory, 25-23, 25-20.

The Wooden Shoes were led by Kelsey Deters with eight digs and 16 assists, Erica Michels with 11 kills and Lexie Niebrugge with five points.

"Really poor night for us," said T-town Coach Tim Mills. "The varsity had 27 unforced errors in two sets, which means we basically spotted them 13 points in each set. Combine that with a hitting percentage of .113 and you're not going to beat very many teams. Especially when Cumberland played with a lot of energy and their offense moved our defenders. Their setters did a nice job of varying their sets. They mixed in enough tips to keep our defenders guessing."

T-town dropped to 17-15.

Cumberland also nabbed the junior varsity match, 25-19, 25-18.

At Louisville

Centralia Christ Our Rock Lutheran downed North Clay (Louisville) in three sets Monday.

CORL won the opener 25-15 before North Clay came back to take a 25-18 victory. CORL then went out at 25-14.

North Clay won the junior varsity contest, 28-25, 23-25, 25-15.
