Newton Wins St. Anthony Invite, Volleyball Roundup

Effingham St. Anthony hosted a volleyball invitational during the weekend.

Newton captured the championship with a win over Shelbyville, 25-21, 25-15.  Leading the Eagles in the tourney were Hemrich with 11 aces and 98 assists, Probst with 46 kills, Kuhl with six blocks and Geltz with 52 digs.

Third place went to Pana over Okaw Valley, 27-25, 25-18.

At Charleston

Effingham captured third place in the Charleston Tournament Saturday while Teutopolis finished fourth.

The Hearts defeated Decatur MacArthur, 25-23, 25-18 then won over Carbondale, 25-22, 25-15. EHS fell to Highland, 25-19, 25-16. The Hearts then defeated Teutopolis, 26-24, 25-16.

Named to the All-Tournament team from the Hearts were Sam Urch and Jacy Boatman.

T-town defeated Urbana, 25-19, 25-21 then fell to Highland, 25-23, 25-19. The Wooden Shoes beat Decatur MacArthur, 25-15, 25-22 before losing to Charleston, 25-19, 26-24 and Effingham 26-24, 25-16.

In Friday action, Effingham faced Charleston in Apollo Conference play. The Trojans were the winners, 25-19, 25-19.

Boatman led in kills with 10 and digs with eight. Haley Dively had 12 assists. Alexis Chrappa had four aces. Kennedy Sowell led in blocks with three.

At Flora

Dieterich and North Clay (Louisville) competed in the Flora Round Robin Saturday.

Both teams came away with two victories and three losses.

Flora downed the Dieterich Movin' Maroons, 25-23, 25-15. Dieterich then defeated Centralia Christ Our Rock Lutheran, 25-17, 24-26, 15-13. The Maroons fell to North Clay (Louisville), 25-23, 22-25, 15-5 and Cisne, 25-27, 25-18, 15-11. Dieterich finished out with a win over Clay City, 26-24, 14-25, 15-10.

North Clay won over Clay City, 20-25, 25-11, 17-25 then lost to Cisne 25-18, 25-21. The Cardinals beat Dieterich 23-25, 25-22, 15-5. North Clay then suffered a loss to CORL, 26-24, 23-25, 15-12 and Flora, 26-24, 25-21.
