Windsor/Stew-Stras Lone Area Team Advancing in Sectionals

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg High School was the lone area representative to advance in sectional volleyball action Monday evening.

The Hatchets competed in the second match of the evening, taking on North Clay (Louisville) at the Class 1A Effingham St. Anthony Sectional.

WSS handed the Cardinals a loss in two sets, 25-8, 25-14.

"We started the game with a 14 point service run by Mackenzi Tabbert and followed with an 11 point run by Megan Schlechte in the second set," said WSS Coach Ronda Schlechte. "This was Kenzi's first day back to game play so we limited her to just back row to see how it went. The girls were excited to play tonight and then are excited to go up against St. Teresa Wednesday."

M. Schlechte led the way for the Hatchets with six aces, 10 kills and nine digs. Tabbert had 14 assists while Carson Cole had nine digs. The Hatchets improve to 32-6 on the season.

In the opening match, Decatur St. Teresa handed Altamont a loss, 25-14, 25-13.

Windsor/Stew-Stras will now face Decatur St. Teresa at 6 p.m. Wednesday for the sectional championship.

Class 1A St. Anthony Sectional

Class 2A Cumberland Sectional

Teutopolis saw its outstanding season come to a close in the Cumberland Sectional Monday evening.

In the opening match, Pana downed Edwards County (Albion), 25-23, 25-23.

Fairfield then handed the Wooden Shoes a loss but not without a fight. Fairfield won the opener 25-20 but T-town fought back with a 25-15 victory. The Mules then won 25-23 for the match.

"Only one team will end the season with a win in their final game so the probability was high that our season would come to a crashing end," said T-town Coach Tim Mills. "And it did tonight. Congratulations to Chet Snyder and his team. They played a great match.

"We played pretty bad in set one. Too many errors with the ball and Fairfield won easily. Set two was just the opposite. They played poorly and we won pretty easily.

"Set three was a battle. Both teams had some big kills and some big digs. It was back and forth throughout with neither team able to make a sustained run. I was very impressed with Fairfield’s Libro. Sorry I don’t know her name but she really swayed the match in their favor. She had a jump serve that had great late movement and she hit four or five aces with it. She also made three huge digs in the third set on balls that we hit right on the button. Good luck to Pana and Fairfield. They meet Wednesday night for the sectional championship.
 
"Our final record is 26-9. The ladies set a new season high with wins and they won their first regional. There is a lot for this group to be proud of."

Katelyn Jansen led in digs with 20. Erica Michel had 20 kills. Savannah Grimes and Kate Volk scored eight points each. Volk added two blocks and 15 digs.

Pana and Fairfield will meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday for the sectional championship.

Class 2A Cumberland Sectional

Teutopolis -- Deters, 1 block, 6 digs, 1 kill, 3 points; Frye, 9 digs, 4 kills, 7 points; Grimes, 15 digs, 5 kills, 2 aces, 8 points, 18 assists; Jansen, 20 digs; C. Class 3A Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin Sectional

Effingham's season came to a close in the first match at the Sacred Heart-Griffin Sectional Monday.

The Hearts fell in two sets, 25-23, 25-17. EHS was led by Natalie Carie with 11 kills and 13 digs, Carsyn Fearday with 17 assists, Lexi Chrappa with three aces and Miranda Fox with 13 digs.

The Hearts finish the season with a 20-18 record. Mount Zion advances with a 28-10 mark.

Taylorville won the second match over Highland, 25-15, 25-13. The Tornadoes are now 30-8 on the season.

Mount Zion and Taylorville square off at 6 p.m. Wednesday for the sectional title.

Class 3A Springfield SHG Sectional
