WSS, Newton Advance to State Volleyball Tourney

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg and Newton will be competing in State Volleyball Tournaments after claiming super-sectional victories Friday evening.

Class 1A South Central Super-sectional

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg easily downed Cobden to return to the Class 1A State Tournament at Redbird Arena in Normal this coming Friday and Saturday.

The Hatchets won 25-18, 25-10 at the Class 1A South Central Super-sectional and improve to 33-6 on the season.

"I'm so proud of these girls," said WSS Coach Ronda Schlechte. "They came to play. It's an awesome feeling to get to do this again. They had a really great night and I hope they keep playing at this level.

"Next week will be tough so they will have to work really hard. But we will have some time to enjoy and have fun."

Anna Schlechte led the Hatchets in aces with three. Megan Schlechte had 13 kills and led in digs with 10. Mackenzi Tabbert led the way in assists with 23.

The Hatchets will now face Durand at 10:30 a.m. Friday at ISU. In the opening match at 9 a.m., Newark takes on Payson Seymour. The winners advance to the championship match Saturday at 10:30 a.m. while the losers will play for third place at 9.

State Finals tickets for Friday and Saturday will be sold for $8 per session in the following order at Stew-Stras and Windsor high schools Monday, November 7:

From 2:45-3 p.m. -- All volleyball team members and coaches

From 3-3:20 p.m. -- All certified and non-certified staff followed by hgh school students.

From 3:20-4 p.m. -- General public

Tickets also will be available at Redbird Arena on the day of the State Finals for $8.

At Farina

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg -- Tabbert, 2 aces, 5 kills, 23 assists, 5 digs, 1 block assist; M. Class 2A Vandalia Super-sectional

Newton High School also had a relatively easy time claiming the Vandalia Super-sectional Friday.

The Eagles won over Carlinville 25-13, 25-22. Frohning led in kills with 12 while Hemrich had two aces and 13 assists.  Bierman led in blocks with two. Geltz had 12 digs.

The Eagles are now 31-7 on the season and will take on Quincy Notre Dame at noon Friday. In the second match, Champaign St. Thomas More meets Elgin at 1:30.

The winners advance to the championship match at 1:55 p.m. Saturday while the losers square off at 12:25 for third place.
