WSS, North Clay, Newton Claim Sectional Volleyball Wins

STRASBURG -- Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg and North Clay (Louisville) will meet for the championship of the Class 1A Stewardson-Strasburg Volleyball Sectional after both teams captured victories Monday evening.

North Clay opened with a win over Bethany Okaw Valley in two sets. The Cardinals won 25-16, 25-9.

In the second match, Windsor/Stew-Stras downed Hutsonville/Palestine 25-10, 25-13.

"The girls played with so much excitement tonight and it kept everyone fired up," said WSS Coach Ronda Schlechte. "Another strong night all the way around. We had some really strong hits. Our serving is getting more aggressive and movement on defense looked good. A big crowd also helps."

Martinz Gratz led the winners in aces with two while Megan Schlechte had 12 kills and nine digs. Mackenzi Tabbert led in assists with 24.

North Clay and Windsor/Stew-Stras will square off for the sectional championship Wednesday at 6 p.m. The winner then advances to the South Central Super-sectional Friday for the right to advance to state.

Class 1A Stew-Stras Sectional

Class 2A Robinson Sectional

Newton advanced to the championship match of the Robinson Sectional with a win Monday evening.

Newton fell in the opening set to Pana 25-10. But the Eagles put it all together for the second set 25-20 then took the match 25-20.

Getlz led in aces with five. Frohning led in kills with 14 and digs with 13. Hemrich had 13 assists. Bierman led in blocks with five. The Eagles are now 29-7 on the season.

In the second contest, Kansas Co-op defeated Edwards County (Albion). Edwards County won the opener 25-22 but Kansas rallied for 25-23, 25-18 victories.

Newton will now face Kansas at 6 p.m. Wednesday for the sectional championship. The winner advances to the Vandalia Super-Sectional Friday at 6 p.m.

Class 3A Effingham Sectional

Mount Zion picked up a victory over Taylorville in the opening match at the Effingham Sectional.

The Braves won 25-14, 25-14.

In the second match, Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin won over Mattoon, 25-11, 25-15.

Mount Zion will now meet Springfield SHG at 6 p.m. Wednesday for the sectional championship. The winner advances to the Salem Super-sectional Friday at 6 p.m.
