EHS Downs Altamont, Area Volleyball Roundup

Effingham High School picked up a volleyball victory Monday evening over Altamont. Altamont claimed the opener 25-21 but the Hearts fought back with 25-23, 25-18 scores for the win. EHS improves to 10-23.

Chloe Martin led in kills with 13 while Sidney Webster had 18 assists. Kaitlyn Baker led in aces with four. Victoria Garren had 13 digs.

The Hearts also claimed a junior varsity match 25-13, 25-21 to improve to 11-5.

In a freshman/sophomore match, Altamont won 25-16, 19-25, 25-10. EHS drops to 10-6-1.

The Hearts finished third at the Edwards County Tournament Saturday. EHS beat Fairfield 25-17, 25-17, won over Casey-Westfield 21-25, 25-19, 15-9 and beat Tri-County 25-14, 25-15. EHS fell to Edwards County 25-18, 25-22 and then dropped a match to Newton 25-12, 25-20.

Named to the All-Tournament team were Kaitlyn Baker and Sidney Webster.

At St. Anthony

Olney came calling and picked up a victory over Effingham St. Anthony.

The Bulldogs won the opener 25-14 but Olney came back to take the second set 25-13. The Tigers then went out with a 25-23 win.

Leading the Bulldogs were Marci Mills with 13 kills and two blocks and Hannah Will with 20 digs.

At Newton

Newton High School now sports an outstanding 30-3 record after beating Dieterich Monday evening, 25-9, 25-6.

Hardiek and Bergbower had three aces each for the Eagles while Bergbower had five kills. Hartrich led in assists with 10. Smith and Frohning had two blocks each. Frohning led in digs with five.

Dieterich was led by Alyssa Boergen with five digs and one assist and Sydnie Vahling with one ace and one kill.

Newton also nabbed the junior varsity contest 25-11, 25-9.

At St. Elmo

The Egyptian-Illini Conference Tournament opened play Monday evening.

St. Elmo/Brownstown defeated Ramsey in the first match 25-18, 25-10. SEB won over Mulberry Grove 25-13, 25-23.

In the final match Ramsey downed Mulberry Grove 25-23, 25-16.

The tournament continues tonight as Patoka meets Ramsey at 5, Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City takes on Mulberry Grove at 6, Patoka faces Mulberry Grove at 7 and CHBC meets Ramsey at 8.
