EHS Downs Charleston in Two Games

CHARLESTON -- Charleston picked up the first point of the contest, but Effingham zipped off the next five scores and went on to claim the first game win 25-16 in varsity volleyball competition Thursday.

The Trojans pulled within 14-12 but the Hearts went on a 6-1 run. Again Charleston came back but the Hearts' Shannon Daugherty had a block at the net and Kelly Utz served up an ace. Deedra Myers then nailed one and the Hearts had scored the final six points in the win.

In the second contest, Effingham held a 16-13 lead then brought home five points to lead 21-14. A Daugherty kill and aces by Myers ended the contest in the Hearts favor 25-18.

Kourtney Utz and Daugherty had four kills each. Daugherty led in the assists category with eight while Utz provided seven. Kelli Utz led in digs with six as the Hearts improved to 5-4.

In the junior varsity match, Effingham lost the opener 25-20 but came back with 25-23, 25-18 scores to improve to 6-1.

In a freshman contest, Effingham picked up a 25-15, 25-21 win and is 4-0.
