Stew-Stras Claims NTC Tourney, EHS Wins Edwards Co. Crown

Stewardson-Strasburg High School captured the championship of the National Trail Conference Volleyball Tournament Saturday.

Stew-Stras competed in the Gold Bracket and downed Effingham St. Anthony 20-25, 25-23, 25-17. St. Anthonty then won over St. Elmo/Brownstown 25-22, 25-24. Stew-Stras then beat St. Elmo/Brownstown 25-9, 25-19 for the victory.

"Obviously the St. Anthony match was a huge win for us after they had just beaten us in regular season play," said Stew-Stras Coach Ronda Schlechte. "The girls played really hard. We had spent a lot of practice time preparing for them and it paid off. The first set of the St. Elmo/Brownstown match we had a very strong set. Unfortunately Kendall Knop went down at the end of the game and didn't return.

"The girls adjusted well once again with new positions and was able to take set two and win the championship. It's hard to really enjoy the win when you have one go down. Everyone stepped up nicely to help with the win. I'm so proud of all of them."

In the Silver Bracket, Neoga defeated South Central 25-21, 25-18. Windsor won over South Central 25-20, 21-25, 25-22. Neoga then claimed the Silver Bracket title by beating Windsor 25-22, 25-16.

Altamont was the Bronze Bracket winner, beating Dieterich 22-25, 25-20, 25-10. Cowden-Herrick won over Dieterich 25-22, 10-25, 25-11.  Altamont then beat Cowden-Herrick 25-10, 25-16.

Named to the All-Tournament team were Maria Brasel (South Central), Leah Kelly (Beecher City), Logan Braunecker (St. Anthony), Autumn Bennett (Windsor), Megan Nuxoll (St. Anthony), Gabie Moore (St. Elmo/Brownstown), Becca Schlechte (Stew-Stras), Kendall Knop (Stew-Stras), Lily Laatsch (Altamont), Jensyn Morrison (Cowden-Herrick), Taylor Gresens (Neoga), Emily Bone (St. Elmo/Brownstown) and Mallory Vahling (Dieterich).

At Albion

Effingham High School captured the championsihp of the Edwards County (Albion) Tournament Saturday.

The Hearts beat Fairfield 25-22, 25-19 and won over Casey-Westfield 25-11, 25-17. EHS then downed Newton 25-16, 25-21 and won over Hamilton County 19-25, 27-25, 15-11. The Hearts beat Edwards County 25-21, 26-24.

Chandler Ramey led the Hearts during the tournament, in kills with 39. Felicia Totten had 86 assists. Jennifer Fred had a total of eight aces. Chandler Ramey led in digs with 37. The block lead went to Shelby Nunamaker with eight.

Newton won over Grayville 25-22, 25-10 then beat Benton 25-20, 25-19 before falling to the Hearts. The Eagles beat Edwards County 25-21, 13-25, 15-9 and lost to Hamilton County 20-25, 25-18 and 15-13.

Following the Hearts in second was Hamilton County while third went to Newton and fourth to Edwards County.

The Hearts had Ramey and Totten named to the All-Tournament Team.
