Neoga's Kersey Wins at State Track Meet

Neoga's Corey Kersey won the Class 1A state championship in the triple jump Saturday during the final day of the High School Boys State Track and Field Meet.

Kersey went 45' 3" to claim the state title in the competition held at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.  Jacob Pfeiffer of Windsor finished fifth in the event at 43' 1-1/2". 

Kersey also competed in the long jump, finishing 10th at 20' 10-1/4". 

Another Neoga athlete, Derek Williamson, had a good day Saturday.  Williamson finished third in the 400 meter dash in :49.93 and finished eighth in the 200 meter dash in :23.51.

The third area athlete who competed in multiple events Saturday, Jason Fry of Stewardson-Strasburg, finished sixth in the shot put at 50' 10" and 10th in the discus throw at 142' 7". 

Other area athletes and how they fared Saturday: Brandon Tolliver-Goode of Newton finished fourth in the pole vault at 14 feet...Tye Sutherland of Cumberland finished eighth in the 800 meter run at 1:59.73...and Peter Keller of St. Anthony and Andrew Sharp of Altamont competed in the 3200 meter run with Sharp finishing 12th in 9:48.7 and Keller finishing 19th in 9:53.84.

In the 2A finals, Clark Williamson of Effingham was not able to make the opening height in the pole vault.  Williamson had posted a personal record of 13' 9" to advance to the finals.

As far as team scoring in Class 1A, Neoga tied for 10th with 19 points, Newton tied for 51st with six points, Windsor tied for 55th with five points and Cumberland tied for 78th with two points.
