CHBC Ties For State Title With Two First Place Finishes At Boys State Track Meet

Two area boys along with a relay team were crowned champions at the Class 1A State Track Meet at Eastern Illinois University's O'Brien Stadium Saturday and Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City tied Catlin Salt Fork for the team championship with 44 points each.

CHBC's Daniel Lucas was a winner in the shot with a throw of 18.25 meters. Teammate Jadon Robertson finished first in the 110 hurdles with a time of 14.36 seconds.

The Newton 1600 relay team was declared the champion with a time of 3:23.24 minutes. Members of the winning team included Owen Mahaffey, Ben Meinhart, Parker Wolf and Evan Schafer.

CHBC's Robertson also competed in three other events. He finished second in the high jump with a leap of 2.05 meters, was second in the long jump at 6.82 meters and second in the 300 hurdles in 38.30 seconds.

Lucas also competed in the discus and finished 11th with a throw of 45.02 meters.

Neoga's Dontye Perry was the next highest finisher in the area in the high jump. He took fourth place with a jump of 1.93 meters. He scored six points for Neoga.

Newton's Jacob Wickham competed in the discus and was eighth with a throw of 47.22 meters. He also took part in the shot and placed 10th with a throw of 14.80 meters.

Newton took seventh place as a team with 26 points.

Evan Shafer finished fifth for the Eagles in the 110 hurdles in 14.36 seconds. Parker Wolf was sixth in the 100 in 11.20 seconds.

The 400 relay team of Dalton Baltzell, Ben Meinhart, Wolf and Schafer took fifth place in 43.82 seconds.

The 3200 relay team of Owen Mahaffey, Nick Shamhart, Luke Weber and Luis Zavala finished 11th in 8:22.19 minutes.

Effingham St. Anthony's Griffen Elder captured 12th in the 3200 in 10:07.10 minutes.
