Altamont Wins Boys Track Sectional, Area Competitors Headed To State

NEWTON -- Altamont High School claimed the Class 1A Sectional track team championship as area runners advanced to the Class 1A State Meet Wednesday.

 

The Indians tallied 114.5 points followed by Newton 90.5, Robinson 71.5, Vandalia 60, Effingham St. Anthony 57, Flora 53, Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City 48, Cumberland 39, Brownstown/St. Elmo 38, Casey-Westfield 36, Palestine/Hutsonville 20, Teutopolis 18, Neoga 16, Dieterich 7, Lawrenceville 5.5 and Oblong 1.

First and second place finishers and any reaching state qualifying standards advance to the Class 1A State Track Meet at Eastern Illinois University's O'Brien Stadium track Thursday, June 17.

Athletes from area schools will be competing in 25 events at State.

Altamont has five individuals and two relay teams that will be competing. Xander Moschenrose will take part in the 200 where he finished second in 23.55 seconds. Derick Budde will run in the 800  where he took second in 2:06.68 minutes. Tristan Rhodes will be running the 300 hurdles after finishing second in 42.83 seconds. Eric Kollman finished second in the discus with a throw of 37.43 meters. Sam Mathesius advanced in the triple jump after taking first in 11.99 meters.

The 400 relay team of Kolby Brewer, Logan Duncan, Moschenrose and Tucker Short advanced a first place finish in 44.77 seconds. The 800 relay team of Brewer, Mathesius, Moschenrose and Duncan took first in 1:36.35 minutes.

Effingham St. Anthony's Noah Tegeler will be heading to State in the 1600 after he finished second in 4:44.39 minutes. The Bulldogs' 1600 relay team of Ty Wiedman, Kennan Walsh, Griffen Elder and Max Sager was second in 3:37.82 minutes while lthe 3200 relay team of Wiedman, Conlan Walsh, Elder and Tegeler advanced  by winning in 8:38.53 minutes.

Newton advanced four individuals and two relay teams. Parker Wolf won the 400 with a time of 51.84 seconds while teammate Evan Schafer was second in 52.01. Nick Zwilling won the 1600 in 4:43.56 minutes. Jacob Wickham will take part in the shot with a second place finish in 13.49 meters.

The 400 relay team of Isaac Flowers, Ben Meinhart, Schafer and Wolf were second in 45.28 seconds. The 3200 relay team of Luis Zavala, Nicholas Shamhart, Nick Zwilling and Luke Weber were second in 9:08.44 minutes.

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City will be represented by two competitors in five events. Jadon Robertson won the 110 hurdles in 15.40 seconds, claimed the long jump at 6.55 meters and finished second in the high jump at 1.90 meters. Daniel Lucas will compete in the shot and discus. He took first in both events, winning the shot at 15.42 meters and the discus at 42.38 meters.

Jace McWhorter will be competing for Brownstown/St. Elmo in two events. McWhorter won the high jump at 1.95 meters and finished second in the 110 hurdles in 16.68 seconds.

Brayden Cox will be the lone representative for Neoga. Cox was the champion in the 3200 with a time of 11:24.58 minutes.

Cumberland also will be presented by one runner, Galen Martinez in the 100. Martinez claimed first place with a time of 11.60 seconds.
