Eagles Win Own Sectional, Girls Advance To State

NEWTON -- Newton High School claimed the championship of its own Class 1A Girls Track Sectional Wednesday.

The Eagles won with 93 points followed by Red Hill (Bridgeport) 80, Robinson 72.5, Marshall 60, Teutopolis 45.33, Effingham St. Anthony 42, Casey-Westfield 30, Altamont 26, Flora 20, Vandalia 18, Oblong 17.33, Cumberland 14, Brownstown/St. Elmo 14, Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City 9.5, Palestine/Hutsonville 8, Lawrenceville 6, North Clay (Louisville) 2 and Neoga 0.33.

According to the Illinois High School Association, the top two finishers and any reaching state qualifying standards advance to the Class 1A State Tournament Thursday, June 10.

Newton has five individuals competing in six events along with a relay team advancing to State.

Whitney Zumbahlen will be taking part in two events. Zumbahlen won the 400 meters in 1:00.82 minutes while teammate Laney Hemrich finished second in 1:01.38. Zumbahlen also was a champion in the long jump with a leap of 4.94 meters.

The rest of the individuals will be competing in field events. Alexis Hetzer captured first place in the triple jump at 10.05 meters, a personal record. Amber Russell took second in the shot with a throw of 9.99 meters, also a personal record. Grace Smithenry won the high jump with a leap of 1.52 meters.

The 1600 relay team of Heidi Lindemann, Madison Phillips, Hemrich and W. Zumbahlen won in 4:16.42 minutes.

Effingham St. Anthony's Sydney Kibler claimed first place in the discus with a throw of 32.45 meters. Allison Geen got second in the pole vault at 3.04 meters.

Altamont's Grace Nelson will be competing in three events. Nelson won the 100 hurdles in 15.12 seconds, was second in the 300 hurdles in 45.16 seconds and took second in the 200 in 26.47 seconds.

Teutopolis will be represented by two competitors in three events. Kaitlyn Vahling will be competing in the 100 and 200. She took first in both races, winning the 100 in 12.89 seconds and the 200 in 26.37, a personal record. Isabelle Hemmen won the pole vault with a height of 3.35 meters.
