Newton's Cummins Earns Second in EIU Meet

The Panther men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams combined to post nine, first-place finishes at the EIU Friday Night Special. The men’s team led the way with five first-place finishes.

On the men’s side, Jacob Mitchell captured first place in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.85 while teammate Steven Clark finished third (6.90). In other sprinting events, Calvin Edwards placed first in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.93.

Mike Hesslau won the 3000-meter run in a time of 8:39.36 while Max Gassmann finished third in the event (8:46.45). Other top times included Steven Clark in the 200-meter dash (3rd, 22.72), Ephraim Dorsey in the 600-meter run (2nd, 1:21.57), Sean Wiggan in the 400-meter dash (2nd, 50.10) and Joe Calio in the one-mile run (3rd, 4:18.11).

In the men’s field events, Danny Harris won the long jump with a jump of 23’5.25”. Mick Viken also won the pole vault with a height of 17’4.5”. Sodiq Alliu also placed second in the triple jump (45’6.5”) and Eric Gordon placed third in the pole vault (16’6.75”).

In the women’s track events, Chelsea Sondgeroth won the 5000-meter run in a time 19:09.23 and Jaida Moore won the 400-meter dash in a time of 59.31. The women’s 4x400 relay team also captured first place.

Other top track times included Kristin Rohrer in the one-mile run (3rd, 5:11.23), Amy Yeoman in the 800-meter run (2nd, 2:22.01), Trinea Bobo in the 200-meter dash (2nd, 25.94) and Stephanie Peisker in the 3000-meter run (2nd, 10:32.12). Jalisa Paramore also placed second in the 60-meter dash (8.49) and third in the 60-meter dash (7.61).

In the women’s field events, Jade Riebold won the pole vault with a mark of 13’11” while teammate Abigail Schmitz placed fourth (12’6.25”). Maura Cummins of Newton also placed second in the high jump (5’5.25”).

EIU hosts the OVC Indoor Track Championships in Lantz Fieldhouse on Feb. 22-23.
