Teutopolis' Joe Kingery

Teutopolis made sports headlines in 1986 when their boys and girls basketball teams each won state championships.

Teutopolis' Joe Kingery and Claire Bushur are making headlines of a different sort as they won the boys and girls state championships in the discus this season.

Kingery won the 1A state title Saturday with a toss of 179 feet, 10 inches. He had qualified for the finals with a 179-foot heave on Thursday and had posted a 180-foot throw earlier this season. The 180-foot effort was the second-best this season in any class in the state and the best in 1A.

Kingery's sensational effort follows Bushur's win in the discus at last weekend's girls state meet. Bushur won with a throw of 133 feet, 10 inches. She also finished second in the shot put.

Altamont's Jared Kollman also had a good showing in the 1A discus finals Saturday, finishing 10th with a toss of 146 feet, 10 inches.

Altamont also got a third place finish in the pole vault from junior Tim Moore, who went 14 feet, nine inches.
