Area Athletes Qualify For State From Boys Sectionals

ALTAMONT -- Three area relay teams along with individuals in 10 events will be headed to the Class A State Boys Track Meet after qualifying at the Altamont Sectional Thursday.

Robinson won the team title with 81 points followed by Vandalia 79, Effingham St. Anthony 62, Casey-Westfield 62, Palestine/Hutsonville 56, Cumberland 41, Teutopolis 41, Altamont 34, Red Hill (Bridgeport) 19, Newton 19, Mount Carmel 18, Marshall 12, Flora 11, Neoga 11 and Lawrenceville 6.

The relays heading to state are Effingham St. Anthony (Ty Wiedman, Brian Dust, Noah Tegeler, Ollie Kingery) in the 3200, finishing first in 8:39.86 minutes, Newton (Payton Birch, Adam Bridges, Jerald Eckl, Trenton Hance) in the 400, taking second in 45.13 seconds and Cumberland (Wyatt Brant, Myles Gerhardt, Blake Sutherland, Rayce Zike) in the 1600 with a second place finish in 3:36.30.

The 800 relay team of Elder, Mick Willenborg, Wiedman and Kennan Walsh broke the St. Anthony school record with a time of 1:34.57 minutes but did not advance.

St. Anthony's Jack Elder will be competing in three events at state. The junior won the 110 hurdles with a time of 15.63 seconds, took second in the 300 hurdles in 42.17 and finished second in the 200 in 23.85.

Teutopolis' Joe Kingery will compete in the shot and discus after winning both events. The senior had a toss of 47 feet, 10 1/2 inches in the shot and a throw of 170 feet, 5 inches in the discus.

Two Altamont competitors head to state, both in the pole vault. Tim Moore, a junior, took second at 14 feet, 3 inches while Donovan Delaney, also a junior, finished fourth at 12-9.

Two area runners finished 1-2 in the 800. St. Anthony's Brian Dust, a sophomore, won in 2:04.94 minutes while Neoga's Braden Cox, also a sophomore, had a time of 2:05.30.

Cumberland's Myles Gerhardt, a senior, will compete in the 400 after winning in 51.43.

The Class A State Meet will be held next Thursday at Eastern Illinois University's O'Brien Stadium.

Two Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City athletes will be competing at the Class A State Track Meet after qualifying at the Sullivan Sectional Thursday.

Dylan Webster, a senior, claimed first place in the long jump with a leap of 21 feet, 4 1/2 inches. He finished second in the triple jump at 43-1 1/4.

Jadon Robertson, a freshman, will be competing in the 110 hurdles. Robertson took first with a time of 16.05 seconds.

Pana won the team title with 87 points followed by Tuscola 69, Decatur St. Teresa 62, Hume Shiloh 55, Arcola 50, Cerro Gordo 43, Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City 41, Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond 40, Macon Meridian 36, Sullivan 26, Niantic Sangamon Valley 23, Shelbyville 17, Decatur Lutheran 5, Moweaqua Central A&M 2 and Villa Grove 2.
