T-town Wins Newton Sectional, Area Girls Advance To State

NEWTON -- Teutopolis High School claimed the championship of the Class 1A Newton Girls Track Sectional Thursday.

The Wooden Shoes tallied 11 points followed by Newton 91, Robinson 65, Cumberland 42, Effingham St. Anthony 41, Casey-Westfield 34, Red Hill (Bridgeport) 26, Marshall 24, Brownstown/St. Elmo 24, Mount Carmel 23, Altamont 21, Palestine/Hutsonville 15, Patoka 14, Lawrenceville 11 and Oblong 8.

The Shoes will be sending three relay teams and five individuals in seven events to the Class A State Track Meet March 16-18 at Eastern Illinois University's O'Brien Stadium. The Class 1A prelims will be Thursday, March 16 with the finals Saturday, March 18.

Advancing for the Shoes was Claire Bushur, a junior, in two events. Bushur won the shot with a throw of 39 feet, 10 1/4 inches and claimed the discus at 118 feet, 3 inches.

Jessica Runde, a sophomore, also will be competing in two events. Runde won the 1600 in 5:43.81 minutes and took second in the 800 in 2:28.10.

Two Wooden Shoes advanced in the pole vault. Micah McWhorter, a junior, won the event at 10 feet, 3 inches while teammate Isabelle Hemmen, a freshman, was second at 10-3. Morgan Mette, a senior, captured the 400 with a time of 2:28.0

T-town won the 3200 relay (Runde, Kaitlyn Schumacher, Rebecca Habing, Mette) with a time of 10:15.17 minutes and the 1600 relay (Runde, Schumacher, Habing, Mette) in 4:13.77. The Shoes took second in the 800 relay (Allison Will, Schumacher, Habing, Julia Hardiek) in 1:50.81.

Effingham St. Anthony finished second in the 3200 relay (Riley Guy, Jessica Wilson, Ada Rozene, Sarah Carr) to advance with a time of 10:39.77. Carr was the lone individual to head to state for the Bulldogs, taking first in the 800 with a time of 2:26.97.

Newton has three relay teams advancing, the 800 (Riley Zumbahlen, Brooklyn Herman, Tori Zumbahlen, Mikala Haarman) with a top finish in 1:50.63, the 400 (Ana Rodriguez, Liz Volk, Claire Carr, Abby Stone) also with a first place finish in 51.89 seconds and the 1600 (Carr, Madison Phillips, Rebecca Habing, Morgan Mette), with a second in 4:15.36. Also advancing individually was Herman, a junior, who took second in the 100 in 12.97 seconds and second in the 200 in 26.33.

Altamont's Rachel Jackman advanced in the high jump. The junior won with a leap of 5 feet, 2 inches.

Brownstown/St. Elmo also has one representative. Claire Wilhour, a junior, captured the championship of the 300 hurdles in 46.34 seconds and also advanced in the 100 hurdles with a time of 16.20.

Cumberland has two athletes advancing in three events. Jasmyn Dittamore, a sophomore, won the 3200 in 12:15.25 minutes and took second in the 1600 in 5:45.08. Katelyn Yaw, a sophomore, finished second in the triple jump at 31 feet, 10 1/2 inches.
