Mattoon Wins Apollo Conference Tennis Tourney, EHS Fifth

Effingham High School hosted the Apollo Conference Tennis Tournament during the weekend and Mattoon came out the team champion.

The Green Wave tallied 15 points in singles and 15 points in doubles for a 30 followed by Mount Zion 23, Charleston 12.5, Salem 10, Effingham 7.5 and Paris 4.

Effingham's Kyra Bannister and Emma Kull competed in singles play. Bannister lost to Paris' MacKenzie Martin 1-6, 7-5, 6-3. She then fell to Charleston's Haley Cooley 6-2, 6-2.

Kull downed Paris' Fize Selimoska 6-1, 6-0 then lost to Shannon Daniell of Mattoon 6-4, 6-2. Daniell finished up taking third place. Winning the singles was Mattoon's Molly Nguyen over Mount Zion's Megan Balgemann 6-1, 6-0.

In doubles play, Effingham's Savannah Blake and Kaylee Fred lost their opener to Charleston's Shelby Linder-Eva Bacon, 6-1, 6-0. The pair then lost to Madison Stoecker and Maddy Johnston of Mount Zion 6-1, 6-0.

Effingham's other doubles squad won over Paris' Meredith Penczek and Haley Gates 6-1, 6-2 but fell to Kristen Doty-Katie Ervin 6-2, 6-0.

Doubles champions were Doty and Ervin as they defeated Mara Lebo and Megan Crosby of Mount Zion 7-5, 1-6, 6-2.
