EHS, St. Anthony, T-town Winners In Tennis

Effingham High School defeated Newton in a very tight tennis match Monday, 5-4.

Three of the six singles matches went to a third set tiebreaker with Newton winning those and the Hearts taking the other three.

After each team won a doubles match at No. 1 and No. 3, all eyes were on the No. 2 doubles match.

"The girls felt pressure all around tonight," said EHS Coach Erik Williamson. "It was a much needed push to dig deep and find a way to win the close matches. Well played match by both sides tonight, a thriller to watch for sure."

Riley Arend, Lydia Kull and Gracie Kroenlein were winners in singles play for the Hearts. Taking wins for Newton were Emily Probst, Lindsey McClain and Kaitlyn Olmstead.

In doubles action, Eden Wendilng and Kull won the No. 1 spot, 6-3, 6-2. Newton's Probst and Jean Lin won at No. 3,  6-4, 6-3.

The deciding doubles win came at No. 2 as Arend and Madison Mapes combined for a 7-5, 6-3 win.

At Newton

Singles

No. 1 -- Riley Arend (E) defeated Madison Emmerich (N), 6-0, 6-0

No. 2 -- Emily Probst (N) defeated Eden Wendling (E), 3-6, 7-6 (5), 11-9

No. 3 -- Lydia Kull (E) defeated Jesilyn Hall (N), 7-5, 6-1

No. 4 -- Lindsey McClain (N) defeated Aila Woomer (E), 5-7, 7-6 (5), 11-9

No. 5 -- Gracie Kroenlein (E) defeated Olivia Flowers (N), 6-0, 6-3

No. 6 -- Kaitlyn Olmstead (N) defeated Madison Mapes (E), 6-0, 2-6, 13-11

Doubles

No. 1 -- Wendling-Kull (E) defeated Olmstead-McClain (N), 6-3, 6-2

No. 2 -- Arend-Mapes (E) defeated Hall-Flowers (N), 7-5, 6-3

No. 3 -- Probst-Jean Lin (N) defeated Woomer-Kroenlein (E), 6-4, 6-3

 

At St. Anthony

Effingham St. Anthony played host to Shelbyville and picked up a 8-1 victory.

The lone win for the Rams came at No. 1 singles as Layla Gill had to fight hard to down Grace Karolewicz. Gill won the opener 6-2 but Karolewicz fought back for a 7-6(1) win in the second set. Gill then went out at 10-6 for the match.

Elizabeth Kabbes, Reese Jones and Sharon Dong had easy sets going 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5. Madelyn Brown took 6-0, 6-1 wins at No. 2. Kyra Swearingen had to fight at No. 6 winning 6-3 then losing 6-4 before pulling out the match 10-6.

In doubles play, Kabbes and Madelyn Brown were 6-4, 6-2 winners at No. 1. Reese Jones combined with Isabelle (Izzy) Hakman to win 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2. The final match went to Karli Jones and Evitt Nashed, 6-4, 6-3.

At St. Anthony

Singles

No. 5 -- Sharon Dong (SA) defeated Aleah Wallis (SV), 6-0, 6-0

No. 6 -- Kyra Swearingen (SA) defeated Delaney Keown (SV), 6-3, 4-6, 10-6

At Teutopolis

Teutopolis easily handled Casey-Westfield to the tune of 8-1 in tennis action Monday.

The Wooden Shoes swept singles play. Macy Probst won at No. 1, 6-1, 6-0. Grace Hoene took the  No. 2 spot, 6-3, 6-1. Isabelle Hemmen was a 6-3, 6-1 winner at No. 3. Carley Habing won the No. 4 spot, 6-4, 6-0. Kenna Koester took No. 5, 6-2, 6-0. No. 6 went to Livia Hemmen, 6-2, 6-1.

In doubles play, Probst-I. Hemmen won, 6-4, 6-3 at No. 1.

Casey-Westfield won the No. 2 spot as Emma Mason and Emily Sherwood won, 7-6 (3), 6-3.

Hoene and O. Hemmen took the No. 3 spot, 6-0, 6-0 and Molly Niemerg and Grace Schumacher won 6-4, 6-2 at the final spot.

At Teutopolis
