CHARLESTON -- Effingham High School edged Charleston, 5-4 on the Trojans' homecourt in tennis action Tuesday.

The Hearts were successful in four of the six singles matches. Riley Arend went 6-4, 6-1 to down her opponent at the No. 2 spot. Lydia Kull lost the opener 6-4 but steadied and came back with 6-4, 10-7 victories for the win. Riley Seachrist was a 6-1, 6-2 winner while Eden Wendling claimed her victory over the exact same count, 6-1, 6-2.

In doubles play, the Hearts pulled out the No. 2 victory for the team win, 8-7.

"Our girls had a lead of 4-2 after singles and needed only one doubles win to clinch the victory and with some great tennis played by both teams we picked up the win we needed at the No. 2 doubles place in a tiebreaker," said EHS Coach Erik Williamson. "Both teams played some really great tennis tonight. I am very proud of the team for their performance against another Apollo Conference opponent."

Up next for the Hearts will be Teutopolis on the Wooden Shoes homecourt at 4 p.m. Thursday.
